Why should I keep Easy Eject on my T42?
Why should I keep Easy Eject on my T42?
Does anyone really needs the "Easy Eject"-soft? I never ever stopped any USB-device before removing it from my notebooks - no problems at all. Is the only reason for keeping EE the removal or hot swapping of the CD/DVD-drive?

If you have important data on a USB device like HDD or Flash I highly recommend using Easy Eject or the aquivalent XP tool. Data loss already happend to me without stopping the device first.
T40p 2373-g1g: 1.6 GHz, 1536 MB RAM, 160 GB @ 5400 rpm drive, 64 MB Video, IBM a/b/g II, CD-RW/DVD Combo II, M10 Fan, Ubuntu 8.04
Uh, now I'm becoming really scared
I regulary make backups of my data - cause they're kind of unique
- but I didn't ever spend a thought on hot plugging my usb-memory. Probably it's the best trying to use Easy Eject, but I fear that it'll be very hard to avoid the force of bad habit
*** Edit *** what about standby? is it ok to unplug a memstick when the thinkpad is in standby-mode?

I regularly backup my data, and use a USB 2.0 external HD as well as several thumb drives. My optical drive is also screwed down. I never stop the devices and never used easy-eject. I've never had a problem with data loss before. As long as you do not turn off or pull out the drive cable while the light is going, you'll be safe.
Of course, the "stop device" function exists for a reason, and it all depends on how much of a risk you perceive it to be...
The only reason I kept EZEject on my new install is because there was some weird functionality it allowed with the port replicator II/minidock...don't remember what it was, but it doesn't take many system resources so I let it stick around.

No. The only "acceptable" thing to unplug in standby is the AC cord.greg0815 wrote:*** Edit *** what about standby? is it ok to unplug a memstick when the thinkpad is in standby-mode?
Stop any USB devices before removing, especially memory sticks and external HDs. Not a critical thing when dealing with an outboard optical drive however.

And don't forget all of you with USB-Sticks, a recent test in a german pc magazine showed that a dozen of these are not enough protected against ESD, that means you have no longer access to the stick and everything is lost! if you are interessted i can try to scan it and post it here.
About stop devices, remember that USB-HDs have Cache which lose everything if you unplug so don't expect that everything is ok if newer happend so far, it's a good idea to prevent that and don't have to make the experience.
