T42 keeps "going dark"

#1 Post by homerlex » Sat Mar 05, 2011 10:51 pm

I have a T42 with XP. Within the last week I have been having a problem a lot where all of the sudden my screen goes dark. Some time the machine even reboots.

When it goes dark I cannot output to an external monitor either so it seems like the video card it crapping out.

Any idea on how to troubleshoot this? Does it sound like an overheating problem perhaps?

I'm seeing errors like the following in the system log as well (not sure if its related since I see it in the log after the system is rebooted):
Error code 000000ea, parameter1 863a58c0, parameter2 86422ec0, parameter3 86e79548, parameter4 00000001.

Error code 000000ea is most likely a GPU problem. Replace the systemboard or send it out to a reballing outfit for repair.

Thanks for the reply. I found other threads about people having the same issue and the problem just happening when moving the laptop. Mine seems to be the same issue. If I leave it on the table and don't move it it doesn't crash. As soon as I pick it up it goes down.

I've been looking to replace the laptop anyway.

Regards.
