can't get access connections software to manage wireless con

#1 Post by iamtree » Tue Mar 22, 2005 9:55 pm

I am a new owner of a T42 and since the day I got it I have had a problem getting the ibm software to mange the wireless connections. I have a T42 2379 dxu using the intel wireless 2200 bg card. I have never gotten the Fn F5 button to work...I get a message that says unable to change power state of wireless radio and it tells me to update driver. When I have windows control my wireless connection everyting works fine (when windows is controling things the wireless connection status window that pops up when I click on the icon in the taskbar window says the radio is off). I was on the phone with ibm for hours and everyone I spoke with said to try different things, mostly updating drivers and bios, and even updating the firmware on my linksys router. Then a technician said to send the computer to easy serve and they will replace the card. When I got it back the wireless was working but under windows control and the Fn F5 button still couldn't control the on orff of the wireless radio. Easy serve sent my machine back unrepaired (they updated the bios again) saying they couldn't duplicate the problem. I took the machine to an ibm technician in town and he determined the card is ok, that the problem is that the ibm software doesn't work with my card (he got it working under windows setup. He was going to call them to find out what is up. He said I could call a saleman and complain to him, that there software doesn't work with their card. Another wierd thing is I used the new Thinkpad software installation utility and it said my wireless card needed updating from version 8.10.28 to 9.01.13. I tried to install it with that utility but it didn't work (I looked in windows and saw the older driver) I installed the the newer driver through windows (it is an intel driver that had a different location than the other drivers), but after that I couldn't get the card to work at all, so I went back to version 8.10.28 and now things work under windows control. One last thing when I use PC Doctor to try to test the wireless adapter it doesn't ever find it...it only finds the wired card...is that normal? Sorry for the long winded post, but if any one has suggestions I would appreciate it...I have read a lot of posts about this and am looking in to getting registry first aid to see if that helps.

To get FNC F5 working I had to load Intel Sebring API driver that is on your original IBM installation.
See this forum for more info:

I reloaded XP shortly after getting my T42 with Intel 2200 and only loaded the drivers I wanted. Intel 8.10.28 and API. Works fine under XP. Just for kicks I loaded Access Connections back on and it is working fine, too. But I don't see any benefit for my purposes. YMMV...

Thanks so much...I think I saw your original post a while back before I got my computer and I didn't remember it...I also didn't find it when I was searching for help with this problem. I had to remove API and reinstall it and then it worked. Why doesn't IBM know about this? I must say that as much as I like this computer, I don't know if I like access connections or not..it seems kind of nice, but then it seems to repeat what windows does. By the way do you knlow what this API program is or does and also do you know why we have to use the version 8 driver and not the version 9 (even though the installer program says to update? Thanks again and thanks to this great forum!

No idea. Just stumbled onto it when I reformatted my drive. As I said, I wanted minimum IBM driver/apps on reload. But F5 didn't work anymore. Played around loading various drivers. API worked. As I said, Access Connections doesn't ring my chimes. It might work for others. XP managed my wifi just fine. I may delete AC tomorrow after trying it out for the last week or so.
