T43p & Samsung HM160HC

#1 Post by lukee » Fri Mar 11, 2011 2:56 am

Hello,
yesterday, when I booted into Ubuntu linux, I got message from the Disk Tool, that my Samsung HM160HC recently got 2 bad sectors and that these sectors were remapped to a special area (SMART attribute 'Realocated Sector Count' = 2). Disk Tool informed also that this is a pre-failure stage of the drive. I just want to ask, if this is really serious error and I have to look for another HDD? I've had always HD Active Protection System on, my ThinkPad never fell down etc... Thanks for your answers.

Hard drives just wear out, this is a normal process.

However, you could try to locate/purchase etc HDD Regenerator which is very effective in repairing bad sectors. Older versions of HDD Regenerator are included in Hirens Boot CD for example.

I wouldn't replace a drive for (2) bad sectors since they were reallocated. Just keep an eye on it and keep good backups. It it increments frequently then replace the drive. If it doesn't increment, then just check it once in a while.

If I understand correctly the S.M.A.R.T. technology, is it true, that if it will warn about some reallocated sectors, then it should warn this operation also in 'Reallocation Event Count' parameter? I've still this value zero...

Edit: I am thinking to get back to the Hitachi drives, does exists some 7200rpm 160GB ATA from Hitachi? Or another drive with 200 - 250 GB capacity and 7200rpm?

While you're at it, why don't you convert that machine to SATA?

Simple answer: no skills to perform the mod, no equipment, no chance to find somebody who can do the mod for me...

Contact poshgeordie, he can remove the chip for you in minutes!
All you need to do then is make the SATA connector hookup.
