ThinkPad processors

Good day all
I truly hope this does not sound like a stupid question to ask but I have a 2366-66u t30 with a 1.9GHZ processor and I want to put this processor in a 2373-72u t40 that had a 1.5GHZ processor at least I think this a correct description of the two . And if it is possible is it going to make a differents and would it make sense to do this ? the t40 has a 80 gig hd and 2gig ram and it seems a shame to let it just sit since I installed windows 7 home premium just a few months ago and this is the second one I have had that stopped working in the last year or so .
I know its old but i do like these machines and am comfortable with my ThinkPad so I would like to keep it . So I am hoping that there is still hope for my ThinkPad

It is not possible, they are (2) different sockets. The T30 uses a Pentium 4M, and the T40 a Pentium M Banias.

I was not sure about that issue but I did not expect that they were compatible I guess that I will have to pick up a processor some where . Have you any idea what is the fastest processor i can use in my t40 (2372-72u) and approx how much $ do you think would be fair ? As I said I really am happy with my Think Pad so I want to keep it but if replacing the processor is to much cost as opposed to replacing the computer . I guess I would go with the latter its just that there is so much to consider when it comes to stats/ cost /performance/quality/ect.ect so thats where I am at

Your most sensible bet for that T40 would be a Dothan CPU, either the Pentium M 735 (1.7GHz, Intel SL7EP) for ~$10.- or the Pentium M 745 (1.8GHz, Intel SL7EN) for ~$25.-.
Max is the M 765 (2.1GHz, Intel SL7V3), which probably runs way too hot to be comfortable (and costs ~$85.- upwards).
A Dothan has 2MB L2-cache, the Banias only 1MB.

So the 1.7-1.8 would be best would the difference between the 1.5 and the 1.8 be noticeable ? I mean in performance and so my guess is that all I would need is some silver grease for install and a little know how ? I mean nothing special or particular other than the basics ?

You'll definitely notice the difference, even if you would take just a same speed 1.5GHz Dothan.
The doubled L2-cache makes quite a difference.
Get some Arctic Silver 5, clean off the old gunk with isopropyl alcohol (90%), and apply no more than a rice corn size dollop of AS5. Spread with an old credit card or similar.
Make sure to remove AC and main battery before you start.

Ok so i picked up a SL7EP and a Samsung HM160HC 160GB 5400rpm HDD for $70 the advise about the dothan was bang on big difference I have not yet installed the HM160HC but from what i have read hear and else where its a good upgrade so i figure it was a decent deal for the two and went for it the install of the cpu went smooth following your instructions but I could not get a hold of the as5 so I used ZP heatsink compound made by RoHS I was told that it is just as good as as5 so thats what I used it seems to be ok i guess I will find out soon enough any way Thanks again for the tips and I will update once again after the the new hard drive is installed .

Ok so I installed the SamsungHM160HC160GB 5400rpm HDD and as soon as I install windows 7 I get a message that there is a problem with HD and I should back any data I do not want to lose so i down loaded the lenovo toolbox and did a system scan and the HD failed three tests and was so slow I knew that there was a problem with the HD after reading all the good things about it and it was slower than the 40gig travel star that came with my system so I talked to the guy and sent the report from the system scan and he said he could not beleive the HD failed and so he has agreed to refund me for the HD so that was good but after all the B.S of install and uninstall of windows and other programs it has been a learning thing for me not to buy used HD,s so now I guess I am back to the hunt for a good HD ! any one have any advise on what is good and what is not and what I should watch out for ? should I look for some thing 7200 or 5400 and whats the biggest space can I get for my Thinkpad T40 ? any way

Just buy a *new* Samsung and enjoy...

If you need more space, get a WD 250GB or 320GB - that's as big as PATA laptop drives come.
