T41p running hot with Dothan 2.1GHz
T41p running hot with Dothan 2.1GHz
I've upgraded my T41p as much as i could a few years back and swapped for a Dothan 2.1GHz SL7V3 CPU inside.
Problem is that the CPU is running at 63C at idle inside Windows 7.
Is there any way to reduce the heat? i don't feel comfortable with this heat at idle?
I have Arctic Silver 5 paste with very thin layer, can i change the fan? would that help?

Re: T41p running hot with Dothan 2.1GHz
Go back to a 1.7 (SL7EP) or 1.8G (SL7EN) GHz CPU.
They run much cooler and you will hardly notice the CPU-speed difference.

Would swapping the fan from a T43p be better than what i have now?RealBlackStuff wrote:Go back to a 1.7 (SL7EP) or 1.8G (SL7EN) GHz CPU.

I don't want to change CPU as i noticed considerable performance rise when i changed the CPU, i had the 1.7GHz before and the system is much faster with the 2.1GHz now.

I got the temp down to 43C now with TP Fan and BIOS mode instead of SMART mode.

Re: T41p running hot with Dothan 2.1GHz
The T43 or T43p fan would not fit physically.
Correction: they WILL fit.
I was looking at a R5x fan 13N5182, which has a sharp angled exhaust over the sound port.
I hadn't realized it has a cutout to accommodate that sound port.
T4x fans are lower, and have a rectangular fit at the exhaust.
For your T41p machine, the best fan is the Fan assembly (long) M10, P/N 13R2657
A new one wouldn't hurt, but have you ever cleaned out all the dust from the fan?
Use compressed air, but hold the fan itself in place with e.g. a toothpick, to stop it from wrecking its bearing.

T43p fan DOES fit and I've used it many times. Later revisions of T43 fans have thicker copper blocks on the GPU portion of heatsink and also the grey thermal pad on the heatsink itself which contacts the keyboard and these are more effective.
I use Dothan 1.7 which is overclocked to 133 MHz (2.26 GHz) bus on my T42 and it works cooler and quieter than my 1.86 GHz Dothan in my T43. Go figure.
I can take some photos if you like of my setup.

Yes please post some photos and also specify the part number for the FAN so i can order the correct one, thanks again.Raceboy wrote:T43p fan DOES fit and I've used it many times. Re: T41p running hot with Dothan 2.1GHz
M10 (T42/p) long fan = 13R2657
M24 (T43/p) long fan = 26R9074
M10 is nice and quiet, but for dealing with *real* heat, nothing beats a M24 in my experience. PM765 would qualify as a real heat producer, especially when combined with a Fire Gl T2 in a 14" shell...

Re: T41p running hot with Dothan 2.1GHz
Hi,
63C at idle is not *that bad* for a T41 dothan running at 2.1GHz as long as no power management is being applied (i.e the multiplier has not been lowered). What I would do is install NHC and set ti to run 'Dynamic switching' when idle, even if AC is connected. If this is not enough, try to undervolt it a bit. This requires some trial and error but can significantly reduce temps. ... You can even reduce the max. multiplier with NHC if you feel it 'works' too hot (not at idle), so in any case switching for a slower processor does not make sense.
In any case remember that the temp to watch out is the max load temp (not the idle temp). 90-95C is a good guideline to take some action at that point.
