Something wrong with T42 LCD...

#1 Post by pat » Wed Mar 23, 2005 12:01 pm

sometimes when I play CS:Source with my 2378-FVU, the screen freezes up and all of a sudden it starts to fade out and what looks like water marks come up on the screen...and the whole computer freezes up and the only way I can reboot is using the power button...

has this happened to anyone else?

Hey Pat,

I had that happen with my T42 right out of the box. The driver set I used made no difference. See if you can run 3dmark2005 (www.futuremark.com) and get the same behavior. If you do, send it back to IBM for a new motherboard. That's what I had to do. They replaced the board and it has been pretty much fine ever since. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response. If I have them replace the motherboard will I lose my Windows install?

Don't send the HD in with the unit and the point is moot!

Sounds like a bad component on the motherboard: capacitor, cold solder joint, something. If it was bad video RAM, the video might screw up but the system itself would be unlikely to lock up.

To verify that it really is locked up have you tried:
1.) CAPS LOCK, SCROLL LOCK keys. Do they make the lights go on and off after this occurs, or are they locked up also?
2.) Have you hooked the system up to an external monitor to see if there is the same video issue externally when this occurs?

Don't know if any of this will help, but thought i would ask.

He should return it to IBM. If he still has in-warranty machine.
