T 40 - Screen is black

Hi

My thinkpad T40 was turned on. Went I walked in the room. the display was black.

I restarted. On startup, the display has a pinkish hue. Then it faded to normal as it continued to startup. After about a minute, it went black again.

Is the pinkish hue and black screen a clear sign that the LCD assembly must be replaced?

It's a clear sign the CCFL (backlight) is going bad. It's about a $10 part, but extremely difficult to replace without damaging the panel. Other options are indeed replacing the LCD panel, or replacing the complete lid. Fortunately, because of the many T4x machines with GPU failure, LCDs for these are plentiful.

sounds kind of like the back light is dying, but a bit different than other reports i've read. when the screen goes black, can you still see the desktop and windows if you look close? if so, it's the back light. they can be changed, but it's not a fun-sounding job. might be easier to find a used lcd/lid assembly and replace it entirely.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a spare t40 for parts. I'll swap the LCD assembles.
