Replacing Lid switch easy job?

#1 Post by fefrie » Sat Mar 26, 2011 12:58 am

My t42's screen will not turn off when I close the lid and nor will it go into suspend if I set the lid switch to do so.

Is replacing that switch an easy job? My t42 runs perfectly EXCEPT for this one issue.

The screen is perfect and the plastics are in good condition.

I would hate to have to downgrade to a lower quality t42 for just this issue.

If I remember correctly, the lid switch is built in LCD cable. So you need to swap the cable.
Current: T420
Previous: T400, T43p Flexview, T40, R52, T43p 14"
My first ThinkPad was 570

Well I'm going through the manual, but at the same time I'm hoping that I can remove the LCD screen with the lid and hinges still attached to the base of the laptop. I've done similar with my t23. Can it be done with the t42?

If you can find another T4x LCD cable, you can replace just the switch.
Needs a steady hand and a small soldering iron.

But first, remove the keyboard and KB bezel, then try to loosen that switch, see if you can 'free' it.

Good advice. I'll try this first.

Turns out the little nub that makes the switch had broken off. Thankfully I found another sxga laptop and switched up the internal cable.

Not that big of a deal, but a little tedious.

Atleast it goes into standby when I close the lid. Much easier life!

Now to tackle the power plug. I may leave that one alone. For now.....
