FingerPrint Reader websites authentication

#1 Post by CodeGuru » Wed Mar 23, 2005 6:48 pm

Hi guys,

I wanted to know if you can use the fingerprint reader for just the logon screen or if it could be used to login to secure websites too.

To all the tech geeks there, help me out please!!!

Yes, you can can use the fingerprint reader for accessing web sites, but I don't find it very satisfactory. Here's how it works:

1) Install Client Security Software with the Password Manager option.
2) This will leave you with a padlock icon in the system tray.
3) Password management only works with Internet Explorer
4) To remember a password, you right-click on the icon, select "create" and fill in a value to be entered into a field. Then you drag a "target" to the field on the web page that you want that value filled into. Repeat for each field (usually user-id and password).
5) To fill in a password, you have to right-click on the padlock icon and select recall. It will prompt for you to swipe your fingerprint. After doing so it will enter the recorded values into the web page.

Occasionally, mine prompts for the Password Manager password, and then asks for the finger swipe. I haven't figured out why it does both.

FWIW, I use Omnipass with an APC fingerprint reader on my desktop machine and find it much more satisfactory. It recognizes that a page needs a password as soon as you open it and prompts you to scan your finger. Unfortunately, Omnipass doesn't recognize the Thinkpad fingerprint reader.

Supposedly the next version of the fingerprint software will allow you to select "autofill" for certain websites if you want, so you don't have to click on the padlock and reswipe.

No, you can't!

Actually, I was at an IBM PC Tech update meeting this week, and the rep mentioned that as he was showing off the T43. I don't have anything in writing.

Just to be clear, it only asks for the password on first use after standby or hibernate - after that it's happy with just the finger swipe. It's still a little weird since this is the only time I have to enter a password - power-on hard drive, windows logon, etc, works with just the finger swipe (and only one at that - if you reboot it apparently remembers that you already swiped your finger and logs you straight into windows).
