IBM Thinkpad T41 motherboard swap, which boards do?

#1 Post by SC0U7 » Tue Apr 05, 2011 6:05 am

I hear that any T41, T42, or R51 will do, but is that list final, or which boards can i buy without hesitation if that will work with my T41 parts?

I have the usual case of bad GPU (r7200), and reflow would be pointless.

Thanks.

Any of them will physically fit, but the T4x boards will all have the potential for GPU failure. There were some XGA R51 machines with integrated Intel graphics though that will not suffer GPU failure, although their south bridge chip can fail just like the T4x boards. Still, the Intel board is the favorite to retrofit if you have a XGA panel.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

What about T3x, T5x or T6x boards?

Also, i had my cpu fan set to come on at 60c and to cool until 55c, could that be one of the caused for gpu failure?

Nope, can't use T30, T60 boards, but R52 with intel might work, but you would need different RAM and have the HDD whitelist thing to deal with.

The GPU failure is caused by weak solder joints in the ball grid array. The CPU fan/cooling is not related.

R52 will accept any HDD as the BIOS patch which removes HDD whitelist already exists (see my signature). Any PATA HDD will work with that R52 board. If you've skills with microelectronics, you can also remove the SATA/PATA bridge on the board and use SATA HDDs natively in main HDD bay :wink:

R52 and T43/p boards would also call for a different CPU...

Look at the Mobo-List on my website in my signature.
All ca. one hundred of them will fit.
As mentioned: R52/T43 require different RAM and CPU from the rest, but are identical in mounting otherwise.
