XP Recovery to different partition? i386 folder customised?

#1 Post by xtypestereotype » Thu Mar 24, 2005 11:00 pm

Does anyone know if its possible to recover the Preload image to a D or E drive? I need to have Win98 on my laptop as well and it needs to be on the C drive, or at least boot from the C drive. The recovery program converts the C drive to NTFS so I can't have them both as it is... I know I can do a fresh XP install myself but I just though to give the preload a try this time as I have always formated my hard drives from day one... :)

Another question. Is the xp i386 folder on our hard drives in any way customised for IBM laptops? Or is it just the same as the ones on Microsoft's XP install CD...

BTW, Happy easter for everyone :)

As for the recovery program, it is fully automated and heavily scripted, so there is no way to change it. It appears to be running a ton of DOS batch files and Linux scripts to perform the restore, and it would be next to impossible to modify anything that it does. That is my take on it, anyhow.
It appears to be a pretty darned impressive piece of programming that they put together.

the i386 folder is customized for IBM laptops. You can make a slipstream cd using the IBM volume key which just works on Thinkpads.

Why don't you use a virtual machine for Win98? No need to mess up your Thinkpad.
