I have a T21 model 2647-9AU which still runs the original 6x DVD/CD rom; I've looked up IBM's website of upgrade drives and they list an upgrade to Part #73P3312: "ThinkPad Multi-Burner Plus Ultrabay Enhanced Drive". The descrp. provided at the site states:
"It is compatible with ThinkPad notebooks featuring the Ultrabay Enhanced modular bay and can be used in other ThinkPad notebooks and docks with Ultrabay Plus or Ultrabay 2000 modular bays when combined with the included Enhanced Drive Adapter for Ultrabay 2000."
As far as I know, my T21 model 2647-9AU has the Ultrabay 2000; I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have an "Enhanced Drive Adapter" , which the above drive seems to imply as an operational parameter.
What is the "Enhanced Drive Adapter for Ultrabay 2000"? Is it H/W or just a driver upgrade?
In the end, I wouldn't mind upgrading to the IBM CD/DVD multi-burner, but I could live with just the CD burner they specify for the regular Ultrabay 2000 [there are about 3 of them].
If its just a matter of upgrading BIOS & drivers, that would be great, but if it means more H/W upgrading ($$), I'll live in my legacy mode a while longer and just upgrade to a new notebook.
Thanks for listening and your advice, comments, etc.
Patrick

Don't buy the IBM drives...they are way over priced and are inferior. My recommendation is to buy an NEC ND-6500A (8X +/-) and change the faceplate to the one I'm offering here in the sales section of this forum. I have this in my T30 and am very very pleased with it. Much cheaper too. You can find this drive at http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 028&depa=0
It's only $120 now. I have the Thinkpad faceplate that looks great! Let me know if you want to do this. A picture of the drive above with the IBM faceplate can be seen here:

By the way, this drive will burn dual layer DVD's too!
