HDD upgrade
Hello, right now my thinkpad t40 is running with 30GB HDD. Could I get just any larger HDD, like 100GB? Or will it have to be a special part number? Thanks.

Re: HDD upgrade
Any 2.5" PATA/IDE drive will work.

Two thumbs up (more if it was possible
) for the Samsung HM160HC. IMO the best PATA drive available at a reasonable price, and it's very quick and whisper quiet. You will pay a pretty penny to get anything higher capacity then that, and the max is 320GB.

So, could I just go on like ebay, and search IBM ThinkPad T40 hard drive? Also, how big could I get? Like 100GB?goofyGAguy wrote:Any 2.5" PATA/IDE drive will work.

Any hard drive, you do not need a specific hard drive. Make sure you buy new from a good brand name like Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, etc.
Like i said previously the max for PATA drives is 320GB. 80-160GB seem to hold the best price value.

Re: HDD upgrade
Of course, you could, but you are likely to pay a hefty premium for what it very likely going to be a used drive, from a seller who's reputation you know nothing of.ccookie66 wrote:So, could I just go on like ebay, and search IBM ThinkPad T40 hard drive?
Best thing to do is buy the Samsung drive hunterman recommended from a reputable seller, like NewEgg. Although you can find the same drive on ebay for about the same price, you still won't have the custermer service of a company like NewEgg to back you up.

@Neil, couldn't have said it better myself. If the price is better and it almost always is, use newegg.

Re: HDD upgrade
Last time I checked, one can get the 320 GB drive, from WD for $50 shipped, after entering a serial number from a broken and worthless hard disk.
Re: HDD upgrade
Thanks for the link! I will look into this one. But I need to first replace my motherboard soon.Neil wrote:Of course, you could, but you are likely to pay a hefty premium for what it very likely going to be a used drive, from a seller who's reputation you know nothing of.
