Risks involved in swapping primary drive (T4x series)

#1 Post by Marc_G » Sat Mar 26, 2005 10:56 am

Hi folks-

How risky is swapping out the primary drive on a T42p?

I'm not talking about once or twice, I'm talking a few dozen times.

During some troubleshooting of my system a few weeks ago, I probably swapped drives maybe 15 times or so. I want to do some more tests to help me learn some things about the system, probably swapping various drives in and out another dozen times or so.

While the ultrabay slim drive is intended for swapping on and out, how hazardous is this kind of activity for the primary drive?

FWIW I have onsite warranty and thinkpad protection, so I'm less worried than I would otherwise be, but thought it would be good to survey the group about this.

Thanks in advance

The primary drive isn't meant to be swapped as readily or as often as an Ultrabay HD, but that hasn't stopped me from repeatedly removing and installing different primary HDs in systems on occasion.

But I would have to admit that I would consider 15 swaps in a day a bit much, I probably don't do 20 swaps total during the life of a system.

Take your time, make sure you don't have any bent pins on the drive and always use a HD bracket to ensure the HD is properly registered in the bay.
