T43p Display backlight problem/change?

#1 Post by windv » Thu May 12, 2011 3:57 am

Greetings,

The problem is with the display of my t43p. Sometimes after i do a restart the display wouldn't turn back on, or thats what i thought at first. Than i noticed that there is some picture shown, but very very dim. Almost nothing is to be seen. That happened a few times, and sometimes it worked fine until last night it stopped again and i haven't been able to make it show anything again, no matter how many times i turned it on and of.
So i did a search here in the forum and found out that this might very well be a malfunctioning backlight...something.
I couldn't find anything more specific on the topic.
This YouTube video shows the exxact same situation, just mine haven't stopped while working with it, but rather just on startup.

Do you think thats the problem, or are there any other possibilities. I read somewhere about an Inverter problem. Can it be it.
And since the display works sometimes, is it possible that somewhere the connection is not good. Is there an manual on how to replace this or see if its connected properly. Is there a test which i can perform to determine the cause?
If i have to change the backlight module, is this the one i need for an 14" T43p

THANK YOU in andvance.

What happens if you connect an external (VGA) monitor through the sub-D connector, at the side of your T43p? Does an external monitor correctly show the image at all times?

You will find the T43/p Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) through this page. Maybe you will also find the System service parts - ThinkPad T43, T43p page useful. The Hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p Movie Index may be a good supplement to the HMM.

Unless you are a very experienced technician, it is not adviced to try replace a backlight (CCFL) yourself, provided that the backlight really needs replacement. Backlight replacement is a very delicate affair for the average user... search this forum, and you will understand. It may typically be easier/cheaper to simply replace the entire LCD panel with a new (or a good used) panel; these are available e.g. via eBay.de or perhaps via the German ThinkPads forum.

Thanks for the answer.

I am currently using the laptop with an external monitor and it works just fine. When i switch to the "Duplicate" setting, so that both monitors show the same, a very dim picture appears on the thinkpad's disp, almost unseenable. Thats why my guess was that the backlight is causing the problem.
I just checked for t43p displays running at 1400 resolution, but there were only 1024 avaliable.

Thanks again.
