Hi,
First post here...
About 2 days ago the sound cut out on my IBM t41 laptop.
I've been baffled why its happened... I can play music without error and everything else seems to work but nothing comes out of the speakers.
I get beeps when i use the volume buttons on the top and when I boot up it beeps once (normal) but nothing else.
I cant figure out what is happening exactly...
I'm using Gentoo and Ubuntu linux on my laptop.
no sound on T41

The speakers could be broken, but the 'beep' on startup seems to indicate otherwise. Have you tried plugging headphones into the headphone jack to see if you are getting output from the sound chip?
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
Hi,
I have a T42 with gentoo and this problem has appeared since 2.9.11-r4 kernel. When i reboot with a 2.6.9 kernel, it works. I have other computers (included a sony vaio laptop) with the 2.6.11-r4 kernel without any problems.
Which kernel version comes with ubuntu ? At the beginning, i thought the highly patched gentoo-sources were responsible of that but it seems to be a problem between thinkpads and 2.6.11 kernels. I've seen the 2.6.11 version includes thinkpad features (ibm-acpi), perhaps we should try to disbale it (i use to install it separatly from the kernel with olders versions).
I don't have enough time to test and solve this problem for the moment. I would be interested in good news if you have time to search for the problem.
Regards (and sorry for my really bad english)
