Platter speed? 7200RPM vs. 5400RPM.

Actual throughput? Arguably much more than 50% faster.

Avoid shock? No more than any other laptop HD. Besides the T42 (if that's where you're going to use it) has the active HD protection system.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: that 60 GB/7200 rpm hard disk was like a shot of Viagra for my old laptop. Highly recommended!

I had an old Dell P3, about 500MHz that I put a 7200rpm Hitachi in.
It was like a new notebook, totally different, really zippy.
Yeah, it was still a darned Dell, but...

Find family, friend or aquaintance to buy it for you here and ship to you there. Actually, over $200 is not that much of a markup.

The 6k7 does have some advantages mainly in terms of boot time. Currently my T42 with the 6k7 (and PerfectDisk defragmentation) takes about 70s to load up.

Btw. I got the 6k7 from tigerdirect for $149 with 2 day delivery (last week).

This is an awesome drive and you will be very happy with it. You can get it from Dell for ~$143

I'm up to 16 of the 7K60s (which is the correct reference BTW, 7K representing the speed of the drive and 60 representing the capacity!) in personal and family machines and never a bit of trouble with any of them to date.

I've installed about 30 of them to date in client machines and they're universally praised.

zipzoomfly.com and newegg.com are generally considered the best place to get these drives at the lowest price. I prefer zipzoomfly, but either is acceptable.

Sorry for the bad link, I was in a hurry when I posted it. I see that they now charge over $160 for the 7k60 so I edited my post with a decent price from Dell. You may get it for even less if you have a coupon.
