wifi upgradable t42 does not see card

#1 Post by charlezim » Fri May 20, 2011 10:53 pm

thinkpad t42 -wifi upgradable-does not see any wifi card. Cards have been installed and antenna wires attached.

i have tried the intel 2100, intel 2195 and atheros.

card is NOT seen in device manager-Network adapters.

any ideas on how to fix that ?
(i know i can find the drivers, if the card is seen).

thank you

charlie

Welcome to the forum!

Check whether the card is enabled in BIOS to begin with.

You can also boot from a "live" Linux CD to verify whether the issue is software or hardware related.

Good luck.

The Intel2100 should work fine on a T42. Usually the card is NOT listed under 'Network adapters' in Device Manager when you first install it. I think it's usually under 'Other hardware'. After you install the drivers (available from the Intel website) then the card will be listed in Device Manager, assuming it's not a hardware issue. I have the driver for the Intel 2100, 2200, 2915 if you need it. The 2915 gives the best reception.

Try installing the appropriate driver for your wireless card [Lenovo driver preferably].

Try pressing Fn+F5 to access the dialog to turn the wireless radio on [you might need the Hotkey Features driver if not installed].

thank you to all.
since i posted, i found out that the Bios is locked and i have no clue of what the password is.
i bought this unit on ebay and the bios password was NOT mentioned in the ad.
i have it fixed, except the wireless.
i am going to try to upgrade the bios and see if that works.

If the BIOS requires a password, you can not do ANYthing with the BIOS, least of all update it.
What would be the point of putting a PW in, if it could be that easily removed, huh?

no, the update did not work..........bios wanted the password i did not know.
the party the volunteered to fix it for me is interesting........is your method teachable.....so i do not have to mail and pay each time i run across this?

i will consider the offer.........or tear the whole thing apart and put in a motherboard i have.
