This probably doesn't seem like a big problem, but what good is the computer without a cursor?
It seems to have a life of it's own. Often, it races everywhere without any direction or help from me. Half the time, I can't find it. I programmed the CTRL button to find it , but even that doen't bring it back sometimes for awhile. It seems to stray too far away. It almost seems like it could be magnetized the erratic way it jerks around.
I use the mousepad, the Trackpoint, and also bought a wireless mouse. The mouse gives me more control for using it, but makes no difference when the cursor wants to do its thing.
Does anyone experience this or know what the cause is and how to fix it?
Thanks,
sand

Hey, I have used 3 TP's (770, 600E, 600X) in business and they were great in all aspects. Now I got a 600X at Ebay which worked great - until i have the same problem you have ... I use LINUX on it which I believed caused the problem from one day to the other. But entering the BIOS (keep F1 hold during shut on) showed me that even there (without any OS) the cursor goes cracy by using the trackpoint.
So, I believe the Trackpoint hardware is gone
and I read this somewhere else with the conclusion that the replacement of the full keyboard (80$) is needed ... now I try to use a USB PS/2 mouse - but I cannot switch off the Trackpoint anymore. Newer TP models can do this in the BIOS, mine does not allow this and in LINUX neither.
So, seems that I am out for a new keyboard ... any idea from your side.

mkrabel,
Is it just when you use the Trackpoint, because what I'm talking about happens whether I use that , the mousepad, or the external mouse.
Sometimes it makes me feel like I wish I hadn't bought the laptop because I didn't have this problem with the desktop; hard to believe it's that frustrating, but it is.
Guess I'll either have to just get used to it, or learn a lot more keystrokes!
Thanks for your input,
sand

Hey,
now my machine cannot boot enymore since the erratic trackpoint sends strange errors to the bios when booting ... the error is well known in other communities and forces me now to buy a new keyboard. At ebay you can get them from 2nd hand at ~25$ ... a new one at ~40$ ... proper shops charge more than 100$. It seams that it is possible to replace them on our own following the descripion at IBM
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... lang=de+en
(... there is a full HW maintenance manual if you search by giving your serial no.)
I hoped that there is a way to get out of this trouble cheaper ...
Regards, Markus

Markus,
Thanks for that information, but I don't think I would want to get into replacing the keyboard, since my machine is less than two months old, I think I would try to exchange it first.
Somehow, I don't think it's anything that serious.
Do you also have a problem with the cursor dropping down a few lines, or jumping back a few rows while you are typing, or even the whole page drops down to the bottom of the screen? It's doing it as I speak. I think this is all other symptoms of the same problem.
Could you tell me where/how to get the full maintenance manual by using your serial numberl?
Also, what did you mean when you said that this problem is well known in other communities?
Thanks,
Sand
