Changing DVD ROM

#1 Post by teamdaddy » Mon Mar 28, 2005 9:58 pm

The T23 that I have on the way will be coming with a DVD ROM drive. If I'm not mistaken, you cannot write to a CD with this drive, and I need one that I can write to CD's. I'm looking at the IBM site and they have one that's called the ThinkPad Multi-Burner Plus Ultrabay Enhanced Drive. It is compatible with ThinkPad notebooks featuring the Ultrabay Enhanced modular bay and runs around $270.00. Thing is, I don't know what kind of a bay is in the T23. Can somebody help me out in this regard. I would also appreciate any recommendations of other brands if you have any. Thanks.

Get an Ultrabay 2000 combo CD-RW/DVD off eBay for around $75! It will fit perfectly in the T23 bay.

Thanks James. When you install these drives, are there any hardware, i.e., mounting brackets, etc., or installation software required?

Actually, all you have to do is take the plastic bracket off of the DVD drive that comes with the thinkpad (6 small phillip head screws I believe) and put it on the drive you buy and it will slide right in. There are no drivers to load up so, once you boot the laptop you're all set!

No mounting kit or modification will be required, the drive will slide into the T23's Ultrabay just as it comes from the seller.

Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 71473&rd=1

Of course, you can pay some more and get a "bare" multi-burner replacement drive. You would then remove the DVD drive from your T, strip the mounting hardware off it and reinstall it on the new drive.

It's very simple to do and only requires some small screwdrivers.

By the way, if you are interested in the NEC ND-6500 (auction above), you can buy it for cheaper at www.newegg.com However, with this drive you wil have to cut the faceplate to fit the drive bay. I do have an extra plastic faceplate piece I've already cut to fit, so if you end getting this, send me a private message. It is a very good drive for the money.
