brand new t41 wont post

#1 Post by chrism » Tue Mar 29, 2005 10:53 am

Just got a brand new ibm T41 today. Followed all the startup instructions (battery inserted properly plugged into mains etc)

But the [censored] thing wont post, nothing. All that happens is the battery light (green) and a symbol of a Z in a circle (i cant find any info on it through the manuals)

Its been charging for about 2 hours now, should i just wait longer?

The 'z' symbol refers to AC power. The T41's system board is probably malfunctioning. My T40 had this problem about a year ago - I would hit the power switch and the fan would come on, but the screen would remain blank. No post. No anything. The IBM service center replaced the system board and it was fine... until the graphics chip blew.

Speak with your dealer, and ask him to EXPEDITE a new unit to you.

I just tried to use google, unfortunately without any luck, to find the meaning of this symbol too.
I don't quite understand, how does it refer to AC? It's still on when running from DC.
Logically thinking it seems more to refer to the system being ON, orange battery refers to it charging, green for using DC and blinking when it has fully charged itself.
Perhaps the battery icon is not lit when there is no battery inserted?
This way the Z could notify it still being ON...

The "z" symbolizes a lightning bolt.

Before you send it to the dealer check your RAM.
I just had the same incident. Same symptoms that you described. I reseated RAM and it is working well now.

Now that I think about it, I think you are correct. The 'z' symbol simply means the power is on.
