I don't want to currently boot from a linux live CD right now . I just want to run my 320 wd gb hdd which has a windows vista OS as I already stated.Harryc wrote:Taking everyone else's advice, I hope that you are booting from a Linux Live CD in your CDROM drive. If you still get the BSDO then the issue is that the CDROM drive is not first in boot order in BIOS. Hit F1 on boot, to go into BIOS. Go into startup, boot, then move the CDROM to the top of the list using F6 key, Hit F10 to save and exit. Now reboot.

Well, your Vista installation refuses to play nice with your T43.
Without having the original install media, chances of getting it to boot and run properly afterwards are slim to none.
Good luck.

Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
I thought you wanted to backup your data then reinstall the OS? There is no way to 'fix' Vista if it is BSOD-ing unless you can boot into safe mode and remove the Intel video drivers. You need to hold down F8 on boot to get into safe mode. If that does not work you have no other choice but to backup your data and reinstall the OS. This has been stated before but you chose to ignore the advice.noblegas wrote:I don't want to currently boot from a linux live CD right now . i Just want to backup all of my data first and then reinstall the OS by formatting my harddrive. But I can't used my R51 ibm thinkpad laptop because its completely damaged. I am not currently concerned with formatting harddirve and reinstalling a new OS. Right now, I just want to back up all my data on my wd 320 gb hdd.How do I now backup up my data now that I can't used my R51 laptop? I was told I can use a pata to pata connector to connect to the two harddrives , one thats currently running on my t43 laptop and then back up the data from their.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
please help me. Its been so frustrating for me attempting to back up my data on my 320 wd gb hdd.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Whomever gave you that advice has zero (and I do mean zero) idea of how a PC works and how hard drives work. One last time, here's how I would back up data given what you have on hand. Install the 320GB Hard drive in the T43. Attach the 500GB external drive to the T43. Boot up a Live Linux CD, like Linux Mint.noblegas wrote: I was told I can use a pata to pata connector to connect to the two harddrives , one thats currently running on my t43 laptop and then back up the data from their.

Once Linux loads go into file manager (LXDE) and drag the files you want to keep from the 320GB drive to the 500GB drive.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Sorry, but How can I install the 320 GB hard drive in the T43 if everytime I attempt to install it on my T43, the 2010 error screen pops up and when I pressed the escape key, it continues to takes me to the BSOD screen.(only on my T43). Can I obtain a Live Linux CD for free?Harryc wrote: Whomever gave you that advice has zero (and I do mean zero) idea of how a PC works and how hard drives work. You will NOT be booting from the hard drive, but from the CD. Press F12 on boot.

Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Okay, as Harry C said, I insert my 320 gb wd hdd into my T43(despite the 2010 error that pops up and the BSOD screen pops up), then I insert in the linux cd for my linux Ubuntu operating system, then I press the F12 button to then boot up and now linux would have been successfully installed on my 320 gb wd hdd , removing my windows vista OS currently installed on my 320gb hdd and my OS would successfully been upgraded and now my 320 gb wd hdd would be now compatible with my T43 . Is that how it goes? If that is how it is supposed to go, then I would not need an external hard drive then.ajkula66 wrote:You will NOT be booting from the hard drive, but from the CD. Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
No, the Linux Live Cd does not install Linux. It boots up to a full Linux Mint Version that runs in RAM. The only reason that you are booting it is to backup your files from the 320GB to the 500GB drive.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Okay, but the steps I listed in order to follow through this process are still correct then?Harryc wrote:No, the Linux Live Cd does not install Linux. Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Okay, one last question and I will end the issue: When I install the 320 gb hdd in the T43, I expect the 2010 error and the BSOD screen if I press the escape key. I bypassed these screens by pressing F12 or F8 key button repeatedly ; I can't go to safemode.Harryc wrote:I already listed the steps in the process.

You don't need the Safe Mode.
Linux will "see" your hard drive and enable you to move files to the external drive.

You're hung up on the 2010 error...don't worry about it. Just hit F12 when you see the BIOS splash screen..it's the first screen you see, and select to boot from the CDROM drive. If I recall 2010 happens after that, so you should not even see that error while booting from a CD.noblegas wrote:Okay, one last question and I will end the issue: When I install the 320 gb hdd in the T43, I expect the 2010 error and the BSOD screen if I press the escape key. Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Wow! By miracles of miracles , I successfully downloaded the ubuntu OS onto my desktop and burned ubuntu linux os onto a CD-RW and managed to boot it on my T43 with my inserted 320 gb hdd after many failed attempts. It has now taken me to an installation screen where it asks me if I want to install ubuntu or try ubuntu? Would I pick the ''install ubuntu linux OS' option? IF so, how should I then proceed? You're hung up on the 2010 error...don't worry about it. Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
No, if you want to backup your files choose to try it, not to install it.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Okay, I picked the "try it" option, and it took me to a linux operating system. I don't think I erased anything(hopefully), because it gave me the option of whether or not I want to install the ubuntu system. How do I access the files on my 320 gb wb harddrive on the uninstall ubuntu OS?Harryc wrote:No, if you want to backup your files choose to try it, not to install it.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Do you have the 500GB drive plugged into a USB port on the T43?
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Yes. Now ubuntu shows both my 320 gb haddrive and the external harddrive that is connected. When I click on the 320 GB file and click on programs, and click on send to and I send it to WD smart external harddrive, and they give me the option of sending it in a zip file ,tar.gz, or tar.gz2 file, which file should I choose?Harryc wrote:Do you have the 500GB drive plugged into a USB port on the T43?
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
You can zip the files if you want to, but if that 500GB drive is fairly or completely empty you have a huge amount of storage space, so there is no need to compress/zip the files. Just left click and drag any file or folder you want to back-up from the 320GB drive and drop it on the 500GB drive.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Gotcha. While dragging one of the files on my 320 gb to the WD smartware external hdd, I got an windows box saying "error while copying to "WD Smartware". The destination is read-only. How would I make the destination not read only?Harryc wrote:You can zip the files if you want to, but if that 500GB drive is fairly or completely empty you have a huge amount of storage space, so there is no need to compress/zip the files. Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Alright, you'll need to run the file manager (nautilus) as root. Hit Alt-F2 on the keyboard and type 'gksudo nautilus' without the quotes, and hit enter.
Nautilus should then open up as root. Now try to click and drag.

I still get this error. the root menu window shows my WD smart external harddrive, but not my 320 gb wd hdd.Harryc wrote:Alright, you'll need to run the file manager (nautilus) as root. Hit Alt-F2 on the keyboard and type 'gksudo nautilus' without the quotes, and hit enter.

Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
OK, I'll attach an external drive to my X60 and boot up a Live Ubuntu CD in a bit to see if I can figure this out. I am guessing that you have to mount the 320GB drive as root to see it. Have you ever used Linux before or is this the first time?

nevermind. I am now uploading my files from my 320 gb wd hdd onto my external harddrive. My only concern is, I cannot see any of my itunes music files nor my podcasts, but only the itunes program itself and I know all of my files are on my 320 gb hard drive, because it is showing that I have 243.5 GB harddrive space left , but when I drag my "Program files" folder, its only transferring 1.1 gb worth of files.
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
"Create a new folder on your external HD. Name it something like ‘iTunes Backup’. Next (on the 320GB drive), go into ‘My Documents’ > ‘My Music’. Inside the ‘My Music’ folder you’ll find the iTunes folder. All you have to do is copy that whole iTunes folder to your external HD. The iTunes folder contains your complete music library as well as two important files: iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml. Copy everything from the folder. "

Out of curiosity, do you really live 'in' Death Valley? I didn't know anyone could actually live there. It's a tad on the hot side there no?
Re: My WD 320 IDE GB harddrive and T43 thinkpad laptop
Thats just it. I can't find any folder that says itunes music library like I normally think I would. I click on the itunes folders and I am lead to more itunes folders, but not any of my music files. Same goes with my other programs and software applications. I click on firefox and wordpad and both those applications don't contain ANY files that I saved, but just the programs themslevesw. Firefox doesn't contain any of the webpages I saved andbookmarked , and wordpad doesn't show any of the word documents I've saved on my computer. This is very strange because when I transfer all of the files onto my external hard drive, It indicated to me that I had 243.5 gb worth of free space and that I transfer over around 55 gb of files , and my external harddrive is showing what looks like to me to be only 2 gb of files. I did a search on my external harddrive on my parents desktop computer, and it search a bunch of files for me , but many of the files I did not recognized . Maybe I am encountering more difficulties than I normally would because I am transferring the files from a windows operating system to a linux operating system.Harryc wrote:"Create a new folder on your external HD.
