display speed so differant in differant models?

#1 Post by nikemen » Tue Mar 29, 2005 2:20 pm

So, I was upgrading an older T30 the other day, and when using a web browser, I found that the information on the screen from web site to web site just seemed to POP much faster than my newer T41.

Since this was JUST an older T30, slower processor and uncertain about the graphics card, I didn't think it could be that much faster on the screen.

The memory installed was half of that on my T41, and on the T30 the system was a bit overloaded and upderpowered.

So, what gives? Is there possible a setting somewhere that would create this extra sense or actual speed boost at loading pages?

Same version of browser? Same windows updates installed? Maybe the pages were cached? Browser cache settings?

Please add Location and other relevant data to your profile. Not required, but appreciated.

This is extremely hard to compare, browser settings, browsers, everything matters. Browsing the web is nothing for such processors, and the millisecond differece you noted could've simply been due to some browser toolbar.

so,

so, browsers were the same, FF 1.01,
I had all the latest windows updates installed, and no further toolbars or such on the browser.

Systems, are pretty much configured identical, although one is a 1400x screen SXGA and the other is a 1024x, VGA screen don't know if that makes a diff.

Looking at the specs on the graphics card, they both look to be ATI 7500, but the T30, the faster one is listed as 16 MB, and the Slower one, the T41, is listed as 32MB. One would think that the Slower one would be faster.

i know it sounds odd, faster, slower, subjective, but it really was noticeable. Maybe i'll do a more indepth analysis, timed loads of things like cnn.com

as for caching, no I did not clear the caches of all browsers, but I loaded the same sites over and over again. And hit refresh, to re-load.

Man, wish I could just get this machine loading as fast as the other. Why is it always someone ELSES machine that loads faster than MINE!!

Subjective performance slowness on a hardware superior machine can indicate a few things. My first guess would be that excess running processes, spyware, etc would be to blame but I doubt any users of this forum deal with that. Next, hard disk speed can have a big impact on such things as well as disk fragmentation and how full the drive is. Finally, FireFox can be tweaked many ways to improve rendering speed, time to display and a number of other things (about:config in the location bar). Maybe the T30 owner tweaked FireFox according to one of the many guides on the net. Just a few logical explanations from experience with my own systems..
