please tell me what fan assy I need for my daughter's T42

#1 Post by likesspace » Thu Jun 30, 2011 7:23 pm

Hi guys,

My daughter has a T42 that is getting a fan error. The fan does not even try to start blowing upon startup and the system shuts down after showing the error.
I plan on replacing the fan but I don't know which fan I need for her particular machine.
The computer information is as follows:
thinkpad t42 type 2373 cwu

If any of you can give me the part number for the proper fan model I would greatly appreciate it.
I want to wait until I have the fan assy in hand before I tear the machine down. That way I can put it back together while everything is still fresh in my mind.
Also, if anyone knows the part number for the cmos battery for this machine I would appreciate the information. I figure if I'm going to tear into it I might as well replace the battery at the same time.
I don't want to spend too much getting this thing going but it has been a really good machine for her and I hate to throw it away simply because of the fan.

Thanks in advance.
Dave

Holy Crap, That was fast!!

Thanks a million for getting back to me so quickly.
I wouldn't have thought of looking on Ebay and everything else I've looked at has been in the $65.00 - $70.00 range.

I really appreciate the help!

Dave:

Just to "be on the safe side" (if you don't know this): You will find all part numbers for T42's at System service parts - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p (find the part(s) for your daughters T42 while searching for 2373-CWx ... note "x" in place of "u" - explanation being that "u" in your case is the USA model of this particular generic T42). The part number for a CMOS battery is 02K6572 (you'll easily find it on eBay for around $3 shipped). With respect to getting a new fan, I'd absolutely recommend getting a NEW one, rather that a "refurbished" (the latter which may mean everything!).

Also, if you haven't got it already, go grab the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. Finally, the movies found via Hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p may be useful! There are even more hints in e.g. the thread T42 Fan replacement.

Hint: If the new fan comes with a thin piece of plastic covering the thermal pad on the GPU, be sure to remove this thin piece of (for shipping protection only!) piece of plastic.

Good luck with the repair! :thumbs-UP:

Harryc and Johan.....

THANKS!

With your help this fix was a breeze and I am now a pretty good old guy in my 10 year old daughter's eyes.

The repair was really a piece of cake compared to re-soldering the inducer, ummm...inductor....whatever that piece was on one of my old T23's. This repair took me about 40 minutes where the other repair was a full Saturday afternoon.

It seems that IBM has made some improvements on the T4x series of computers since the screws are numbered on the underside of the case. That made things much easier and along with the hardware service manual it would be very hard to go wrong.

I just wanted to jump on for a minute and offer and huge thank you for the links and the advice that you both offered. The T42 runs again!

Dave
