Question about Dothan in T41...

#1 Post by jasew503 » Mon Jul 18, 2011 11:48 am

I have 2 Dell Precision M70 Laptops, one has a bad video card but has the SL86G (Dothan?) Pentium M-730 1.6Ghz 2MB 533-FSB CPU In it. Will this cpu work in a Thinkpad T41 that has the Pentium-M 1.6 400FSB 1MB Cache? If so, would there be any performance gain? I understand the Dell uses DDR2 ram and has a 533 FSB, and the thinkpad uses DDR1 and has a 400 FSB. Just wondering if these CPUs are interchangable.

Thanks!
Current Systems: T41-1.6/1G/80G, MB Pro-iC/4G/320G, Dell M70-2.0/2G/120G/FX1400
Past Thinkpads: 600/E/X's, T20's, T21/22's/23, A22p

They are physically interchangeable, but the 533Mhz FSB CPU will not run at the right speed in a 400Mhz FSB machine.

am I corect in assuming that it would only run at 1.2ghz and would be a performance drop to the 1.6 banias thats in there now?

Yes, it is designed to run at 266Mhz x 6, but would actually run at 200Mhz x 6 = 1.2Ghz

So would a Dothan running at 1.2GHz with 2MB cache on a 400 FSB still be faster than a Banias based Celeron-M 1.3GHz with 1MB cache?

Don't bother with this swap. Just sell the M70 for parts. If you include the CPU, you can sell the M70 for a little more.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)

I tried this swap in my moms Presario V4000 Machine last night just because the cpu is so easy to get to. The machine originally has a 1.3 Celeron with 1mb cache, and swapping the 1.6 Dothan in it running at 1.2ghz actually got worse perfomance by quiet a bit. Strange thing is the 1.3 celeron gets almost 1000 points higher on cpumark 2.1 than the 1.6 Banias P-M in my T41.
