T43 Recovery Disks Not Reading Disk 1

#1 Post by rconaway » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:30 pm

I have tried recreating the factory partition but I keep getting an error on Disk 1. I have wiped the drive using the PC-Tools software utility, tried the process with and without the supplemental disk and it gets all the way through to disk 1 and says it's not the correct disk. I have checked the disk on another computer and the Disk 1 Recovery disk is good. Any ideas why it won't recognize disk 1?

The first disk that needs to be loaded is Rescue and Recovery, not disk 1...

Of course. I didn't mean to imply I tried disk 1 first. It's after Rescue and Recover runs which was my implication when I said the process. After the reboot, it asks for the supplemental and then disk 1, which it won't read.

I guess you have a bad disk.

I can burn you one if needed.

That's very nice but IBM would replace it if it was bad. I checked the disk on another computer and its fine. I even tried a second DVD player from my other T43. This is a software issue not recognizing the disk number.

I must've restored hundreds of T43/p units in my days and have seen something like this maybe twice.

Both times it was a bad disk, not necessarily the one that wasn't being recognized.

Try another R&R disk and see where that gets you...

Good luck.

That's good information. I will call Lenovo in the morning and have them send me another set. They offered today but I didn't think it was a bad disk. When you have eliminated all other options, whatever's left, not matter how improbable is the answer. I'm also going to try and copy the disk to see if any errors pop up.

You were right, bad disk. They are sending a replacement. Thank you for the offer of the disk and if the next one doesn't work, I will appreciate your help with that.

You also might want to try Windows 7 on your T43...

I had thought about it. Might be a better idea.

It runs excellent on my T43...zero issues and it is very stable.

While W7 is smooth on ATi-based T43s, I have two *major* gripes which made me go back to XP:

a) Degraded battery life

b) Lack of *proper* graphics driver and CCC panel - yes, I know you can get around this by using a Vista driver, but am still less-than-pleased with that solution.

My $0.02 only...

I just spent $50 for these disks so that's one motivation. We use this laptop for field programming equipment so it doesn't really need Windows 7.
