T23 RAM upgrade - Please help.

#1 Post by teamdaddy » Sat Apr 02, 2005 3:16 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm a little confused as to the "amount" of memory that I can install in my laptop. I have the IBM Thinkpad, T23, Type 2647. It was my understanding that I could install up to 1 gig of memory in this computer, however while visiting the Crucial memory site today, the max amount they show for my computer is 512 megs. They do show 1 gig for the Type 2648 however. Is there a difference in the two types of machines that limits the amount of memory you can install? Would appreciate your help and recommendations. Thanks.
Update: I just visited the IBM site, and used the "recognize my computer" option. After that, I went to the amount and type of memory recommended and it didn't distinguish between types 2647 and 2648. It said what I have always heard, that the max amount of memory is 1 gig of PC133/144pin SoDIMM memory. Am I correct then, that I could, if I wanted to, install two sticks of 512 megs of memory without problem? Thanks again.

I had a T23 (2647-8NU) that had 640Mb of ram - 128Mb plus a 512Mb stick added. All IBM and worked great. ... JD Hurst

My 2647 has 768 MB, I am sure that a gig is not a problem.

Ron,

I've had 1GB of RAM in my T23 (2647) for ages, never a problem.

I've got a Kingston KTM-TP133/512 along with an IBM stick in my machine and it works just fine. While I usually suggest using Crucial memory whenever possible, the T23 (like the A30) is a very forgiving machine WRT RAM and will happily run almost any PC133 RAM.

Check http://dealram.com for the cheapest prices on PC133 RAM.

I also have 1gb ram in my 2647-4mu. They are both IBM but only because I found an incredible deal on ebay. Kingston and Crucial are good too.
Then put in a 7k60 drive and you will have the T23 maxed out. Mine seems pretty darn fast for a 1.13ghz laptop and I'm used to current computer speeds.

How 'bout it! Got a T23 2648-4PU, with a gig installed. This thing boots faster than a friends new HP ZD700 with 2 gigs of ram.

And I have a dual layer DVD burner installed, I've pimped it out as far as I can.

Please excuse me for being such a rookie, but what is a 7k60 drive?

The present ne plus ultra of laptop HDs, the Hitachi 7200RPM 60GB.

A few minutes spent reading the almost universal raves for this HD both here and out on the web will soon have you lusting for one.

I'm up to 14 of them in personal and family Thinkpads.

Crucial supports 512MB only because 1GB failed some of their tests. At least that is what a sales guy told me there. I ignored him and put a gig anyway, and it has had no issues for 2 months.
