Re: Good deal on RAM for T43!!
I am not sure why, but...
when I called Kingston last week, they told me
DON'T order the Value RAM for a Thinkpad.
They said that that Value RAM was generic and was not spec'd to the specs of Thinkpad memory.
They did say that if it worked you were "ahead of the game"
but not to count on it working.
They said that these are the RAM modules for use with a T43:

Again, don't know why, or if it is true.

What are the differences between value and 'designed for ThinkPad' memory?kanate wrote:May be they tried to trick you to buy their overpriced "designed for thinkpad" memory line.
I used their ValueRAM in many notebooks (also with my old T42) and never have any problem with them.

I have never had any problems with Kingstom memory in the past as long as it was run at it's rated speed; however I haven't tried their memory in a Thinkpad.
I am using Transcend memory in my T43. It is priced at $73.60 for a 512mb stick with free 2nd day delivery for orders over $100. It works perfectly in the Thinkpad. I ran a memory test program all night one night and had 0 errors. Transcend offers a 30 day money back guarantee and lifetime warranty.

T420s Intel Core I5 2.6ghz, 160GB Solid State Drive, DVDRW, 14" display w/ HD3000 graphics, Intel AGN, BT, 8GB DDR3 SDRAM, Gigabit Ethernet, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
You would have to call Kingston.
However, I did and still don't know the answer because I only spoke to sales and not tech support.
My understanding is that the specific RAM is spec'd with timings identical to the ones that IBM spec'd for the model of Thinkpad that you have, the Value RAM is generic, so all that "matches" is the speed (PC4200, etc) and the CAS latency. There are other timings for RAM other than those, and they may or may not match. The woman I spoke to told me that they would not match.
Now...if you pull out the module sent to you by IBM and buy one or two of the Value RAM modules, they should work fine.
Or...they may work fine in harmony with the module from IBM, no way to know without trying.
That is the bottom line from what she told me:
- Value RAM...no way to know without trying
- machine specific...it will work, period.
