T4x ignoring "turn off monitor" setting

Since a screensaver still uses the LCD parts, I instead use a power profile setting for "turn off monitor" that activates soon after I might get up to do something else for awhile.

However, over the years I have found that my T40 often ignores the "turn off monitor" setting and just does not turn off.

Recently, the fan died, and I ordered another fan on ebay, and fortunately I had previously bought a T41 as a spare - and started using it while waiting for the fan to arrive - and found that it does the same thing.

Interestingly, I had not had a chance to install much on the T41 and most everything was different - T40 has Firefox, T41 has Chrome (easier for a quick installation). I mention that because Browsers are usually the only programs running when I get up and the monitor fails to turn off.

Details:

- Fn-F3 still turns off the monitor

- Both are "refurbished corporate deinstallation" but from different sellers, both providing thinkpads in very good condition, presumably from corporations where the laptops weren't used very much and both receiving them with hard drives wiped and OEM WinXP Pro installed to roughly match the COA sticker, but neither have recovery partitions.

Any ideas ?

I have found that sometimes Windows gets confused as to which power scheme should be in force. You might want to try setting the same times for the "Turn off monitor" option in both "Plugged in" and "Running on batteries" settings, as well as all power schemes available in the dropdown box. If you are running a plain WinXP installation, then you won't have to deal with the Thinkpad Power Manager or Battery Maximizer utility, either of which may also interfere with the power settings.
