T43 fixed the construction flaws on previous models, or not?

#1 Post by dvorak » Mon Apr 04, 2005 6:57 am

Now that the T43 has been out for a while, I've got a few questions about the construction.

Has IBM fixed all of those annoying abnormalities on the T43 that are present on the previous models (mostly T42)?
  • Multibay gap.
    Palmrest flex and creak
Top cover still moving when closed
LCD-Frame gap and the screen moving on the right-top side
Keyboard flex and loose near arrow keys

I can't say since I haven't received my T43p yet but if the T43 case is exactly the same as the T42 I doubt it.

T40 has the same case too, but yet there's no multibay gap nor LCD gap.

On my T40, there is a multibay gap and it is BIG. So it is more of a case rather than specific machine problem

As different models sometimes use different types of case parts, I was trying to find out if it T43 has abandoned the flawed parts and started to use better ones.

Rather weird flaws the Thinkpad line has, and how do those happen are also peculiar.

Atleast the T40's I've seen do not have the same flaws my T42 has.

1. Multibay gap.
For 15" the answer is yes or closer to yes (there's still some small gap towards the back)
For 14" the answer is no (the gap is much bigger than its 15" counterpart)

2. Palmrest flex and creak
yes. very solid

3. Top cover still moving when closed
no such issue

4. LCD-Frame gap and the screen moving on the right-top side
no such issue

5. Keyboard flex and loose near arrow keys
no. I also noticed flex on the area just above where the volume and power buttons are located.

FYI I own a 15" model and as you know the casing is different from 14". To my eyes (I've actually seen 14" and 15" side by side), 15" casing looks more solid and strong.

Thanks for your info, although I'm a bit confused about your answers :)
You say the 14" model does not have the multibay gap and then say its bigger than the 15" model which you said had this gap. Which is correct then?

When I asked about palmrest flex and creaking you say they have flex and it's solid at the same time...

About keyboard flex you answer "no" but then your next sentence starts with "I _also_ noticed flex", that gives me the hint you saw keyboard flex near arrow keys also.

Could you please be so nice and correct my misunderstandings.

Now could anyone perhaps elaborate the issues on 14" models also, they do use different, smaller, weaker parts.

Current T42's top lid is a little loose when closed. The hooks with which it locks itself seem to be a tad longer than the locking "holes", so I can move the lid up and down a millimeter or two. [1inch=25.4mm]

Not noticeable by anyone but the ridiculously perfectionist Thinkpad followers (ie us!). Definetely not enough to bother if you come from another brand imo...

There is supposed to be a little "give" in the top cover - it doesn't lock to the base with no movement by design.

It is understandable, although my old HP's mechanism locks it tight near the hooks, so that made me think it's not inteded.

I wonder if the palmrest on the 14" model is also solid, and if, is it only because of a new palmrest or are there any other inner construction differences.

How about the battery

#17 Post by jalves » Tue Apr 05, 2005 12:49 pm

Is the battery on the T43 loose and rattling, as it is with the T41?
