IBM Rescue and Recovery v2.02.0178 (5Jan2005 latest release)
hi everyone!
i'm using the IBM Rescue and Recovery v2.02.0178 (5Jan2005 latest release).
wondering if i can use this Rescue & Recovery program's disk image to migrate my entire hard drive from a 60 GB to my new 100 GB hard drive, just by using the disk image produced by Rescue & Recovery?
(Edit: I'm using T42s, model 2373 K5H)
anyone has actually tried this & works?
thank you in advance for your help!

should work. Just install the new hdd, boot with the R&R Boot CD (this will install the Rescue environment on the new disk) and then boot without CD into the Rescue environment by pressing F11. Select the backup location (network/usb), that's it.
T40p 2373-g1g: 1.6 GHz, 1536 MB RAM, 160 GB @ 5400 rpm drive, 64 MB Video, IBM a/b/g II, CD-RW/DVD Combo II, M10 Fan, Ubuntu 8.04
Well, until recently R&R (or Rapid Restore before that) was just plain terrible. Not only were the backups unreliable but I know of several people who had their systems hosed so bad by trying to install , un-install, or re-install it that they had to do full recoveries to factory settings.
The newer versions seem to be MUCH better - so much so that I am now using it despite swearing I'd never touch it again a few years ago. But a lot of people still have bad memories.
It's still a bit too fancy for my taste - most people like their backup system to be so simple they are bulletproof. It's hard to beat a DOS bootable floppy or CD that will allow you to save or recover an image.
I'm not entirely comfortable with the fact that R&R runs under Windows for backups rather than DOS or Linux - I think it is always safer to image from outside the OS you are imaging. But so far it seems to be reliable, and the fact that I can make a recovery CD that will load R&R and allow me to recover an image without entering Windows goes a long way toward making me feel safer.
Still - a lot of people don't trust it, and they have some good historical basis for that lack of trust.

Just to be clear, I'm assuming in s0larian's answer above that the backup image is on CD/DVD? I'm confused, because he says "Select the backup location (network/usb)". Or, was R&R used ONLY to make an R&R Boot CD/DVD (although I don't see this option in R&R), and then the drive to be cloned connected via USB?
No, I am not talking about the backup on CD/DVD. Under Programs->Access IBM you find a tool to create a recovery CD for R&R. This is really just for restoring the rescue environment. If you boot with this CD, all partitions are beeing deleted. After booting in the new created recovery environment, you can choose the restore location as always, preferable USB/Network.
You could also create a bootable USB device instead of a CD, but then the USB device will be formated and you loose any data already on it.

Thanks! Didn't know that. Follow-up questions:
1. Once you boot the disk, what do you select to JUST move R&R to the New Disk?
2. The R&R Disk that I created looks the same as the R&R disk supplied with Recovery CDs (except later version). Is it the same? If so, if I ever do a "Factory Image" restore from the IBM CDs, am I better off using THIS (new version) R&R Boot Disk?
3. If you use the method described in the second post to CLONE another disk, does it also create the R&R partition/contents on the new disk. If so, what do you select after rebooting into R&R from the new disk?
