T43 wi-fi question

#1 Post by Lammo » Wed Sep 28, 2011 5:05 pm

Hello all. I recently upgraded our home wi-fi network to a Verizon 4G USB modem (Novatel USB551L) connected to a Cradlepoint CTR35 wirelss n router (former set up was a CTR350 and a VZW USB760, both of which are now available for sale). My T43 with the Intel 2915ABG adapter will only allow me to connect with WEP security and the CTR destructions indicate that this will squish the wi-fi speed. This appears true because the best I get on speedtest is around 2Mbps.

Doing some quick looking around it looks like I have a few options: 1) replace the Intel 2915ABG with a new wi-fi card such as the TP-Link TL-WN861N; 2) use a USB adapter such as the ASUS USB-N10; 3) download and install an update to XP found here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/de ... px?id=1974

Any other ideas? With only 2 usb ports option 2 isn't real attractive. Option 3 would be ideal because free is always ideal. :-) I have XP Pro on the T-43 and I also have a T-60 with an Intel 3945ABG adapter that may have the same issue (I haven't gotten around to setting that one up on the newtork yet).

You need a newer driver for 2915ABG, because it does support higher encryption, and can attain up to 54Mbps.

The latest driver - presuming you're running XP:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... wc05ww.zip

BTW, your speedtest sounds like you have a router/connection issue...how much are you getting via wired Ethernet?

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I will run that update as soon as I get home. I have an older HP desktop connected to the router's ethernet port and speedtest gives me 7Mbps on that. With the old set up the desktop got the same 1Mbps or less that the laptops used to get. So, the laptop is better than it was but it's way behind the desktop. Of course, even the 1Mbps was a quantum leap from the 21kbps we used to get on dial-up (no DSL or cable for us out in the "country"). Thanks again.

What happens when you hook up the T43 into Ethernet port?
