Deleting Driver Folder

#1 Post by Rex » Wed Apr 06, 2005 7:38 am

Hi there,

I have a T22 and have been installing and configuring W2k. Got all (most of, I think) the drivers form the IBM site and installed them.

Having clicked on the ***.exe file, it creates and expands to a folder on C:/ Drivers. Within this folder is the SetUp file for the driver itself.

Once SetUp has been run, is it OK to delete the C:/Driver folder?

Thanks for your reply,

Rex

You CAN delete it if you want, but I don't. It is used for driver setup routines. It will be created again and used for any future driver install. It does not take up too much space.

Leon,

Thanks for your reply. I know that it doesn't take up much space but when everything is up and running, I like to 'try' and keep the OS partition simple.

I do have the original driver files in their compressed format which I will be burning to CD.

If you plan to use the new Thinkpad Software Installer you need the Drivers folder - it looks there to determine the "Available Version" to offer.

If you delete it then it will find the original drivers and list them as "Available" but they are likely older versions that what you currently have installed. As a result the display will list lots of Available Versions which are in fact older than the Installed Version and you will have to check each one to see if it is newer or not. Not a big deal but not the way it was designed to work.

If you're not planning to use the Installer, then there is no real reason to keep the Drivers folder - but it becomes a chore having to delete it after every driver upgrade.

How come the new version of the Software Installer can't find itself?

Doesn't seem to extract itself at all, or I would move the "extract" there and stop getting annoying update suggestion. Seems to go directly to install.

It does go directly to install. I carefully unpack new drivers to C:\Drivers\WinXPP\... to keep the newest drivers in one spot. The software installer went directly to C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\PkgMgr

So, there is no way I can get the Software Installer to stop "complaining"? BTW, NOW I have the same problem with the BIOS Update (starting a "complaining" collection).

Remove the previous version from the C:\Drivers folder.

That's an idea. I always remove a previouse version from the Drivers folder before exploding a new version. I noticed that I removed the Software Installer folder (swinstall I think) and then when I ran the new version, it did not create a Drivers folder - it just installed directly.

I don't have a BIOS folder, I just download the diskette file and create a bootable diskette.

I am sure my setup is different than most. I move all the preload drivers into C:\Drivers\Preload and then created a folder C:\Drivers\WinXPP for the new drivers. As I noted, I delete old drivers out of C:\Drivers\WinXPP before exploding new ones. The new Software Installer checks all the folders I created and doesn't complain about not having the original folders. ... JD Hurst

Don't know what effects this may have later on, but here's what I did.

Created a folder called C:\DRIVERS\77PM11WW (name of update) and copied the contents of C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\PkgMgr to it.

It seems the Software Installer looks for files called IBMTPI.XML so I renamed the file TpiSetup.xml to IBMTPI.XML.

When you run the Installer now, the correct version is shown in the list of Installed Apps.

You could also probably just rename the file in the Program Files directory and include that folder in the list of locations the Installer searches.

Rob.
