shuts down due to overheat - 96C? right after it boots

I just did a motherboard swap on the unit.

I am not good at this stuff but for as little as I pay these T42's it's worth the risk.

I'm sure i messed something up. Everything worked OK for a while then it shut down spontaneously.

On restart it say "overheat warning 96C"

For you Americans, 96C would 205 F. No way it got that hot that fast. I let cool completely and it did the same thing.

The most like problem would be related to my re-assembly.

Any idea where the T42 gets it's temp data?

Most likely you did not put any fresh thermal paste between CPU and cooler (after cleaning off the old gunk).
There's a sensor on the mobo, steered by the BIOS, which shuts down to stop damage.
Overheating can happen in 1-2 seconds flat!

Adding to what RBS said...

A bent pin on the CPU - or a defective/improperly seated CPU - will do exactly what you're describing.

Try another CPU and report back.

Thanks. That seems to be it. I had forgotten one of the cooling fan screws. and there was almost no paste. I scraped a bit off another unit and it seems to working good now..

For the sake of your laptop, do a proper job with that thermal paste, and also fix the other CPU/cooler, from which you stole the paste!

I consider Arctic Silver 5 the standard in thermal paste. A little bit goes a long way, especially with laptop CPUs. This stuff seems to last forever! Clean the old gunk away with rubbing alcohol and apply a rice grain-sized amount. You're good to go!

Not rocket science, but it's always nice to get it right the first time...
