is it possible to eliminate the screen from a t41p?
is it possible to eliminate the screen from a t41p?
I have a T41p with a very dimm lcd.
I am wondering how much difficult would it be to completely eliminate the lcd/lid and just let the rest of the laptop to be used as a desktop with an external monitor.
I don't have much experience on disassembling thinkpads, but I did something inside desktops few years ago.
Is it actually possible?
A.

To remove the LCD assembly you will need to remove the keyboard, palmrest and bezel. You can then install them back.
Keep in mind that the wireless antennas run in the LCD lid. If you remove them, your internal wireless will probably be crippled or non-functional.
What prevents you from simply using the laptop with an external monitor without removing the lid?

Yes!
My main work "computer" is a screenless T4x "Frankenpad" in a docking station with no screen, and permanently connected to a 17" monitor.
The docking station is only there because I bought it cheap and there are 4 USB ports.
I also use it with a USB mouse to give it that ultimate desktop feel, and I could go to an external keyboard as well and then hide the T4x "body" out of site.

I think I know...dr_st wrote:What prevents you from simply using the laptop with an external monitor without removing the lid?
If you are going to be using an external keyboard and mouse, then leaving the lid attached, and closed is the way to go. Especially if it's going to be docked.
But, if you are going to continue to use the laptop keyboard, then the lid will just be in the way.

Re: is it possible to eliminate the screen from a t41p?
ok, I should be able.
and after dissassembling keyboard, palmrest and bezel, what I have actually to do to disconnect all the screen?
I suppose there is a detailed guide somewhere that I will check, just want to have an idea of the complexity of the operation.
I am a rather technical girl by the way

Re: is it possible to eliminate the screen from a t41p?
This document gives you a step by step for completely stripping down a Thinkpad: nickpaton........./T4x_screw_types.pdf.
Strip as far as the end of Step 5, and then reassembly in the reverse order.
This is from a document in my sig, listing some How To's I've produced - there may be some other useful ones.
