GPU temperature on t40p with firegl - 2373-cg6

#1 Post by rychuu » Sat Oct 15, 2011 2:08 pm

Hello,

I would like to avoid problems with reflowing chips in my thinkpad.

And
I have question for all similar t40p users - what is your temperature of gpu? Please write your temp wiith the specification or type - it is important, e.g. in my t40p is 1.86 processor

regards
I am using Lenovo t410 2518-4ju.

best regards

Runs around 46c to 48c while web browsing and iTunes streaming
Using TP fan control
Hope this helps

rychuu, your machines specs are:
IBM T40p 2373-CG6, Pentium M 1.5 GHz, 1024 MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 14.1" TFT, ATI FireGL 9000 64 MB
Have you swapped out the cpu or was it the previous owner. I was under the assumption these cpu's with a 533 fsb were not compatible. Any issues? I have swapped mine out for a 1.8 Dothan with a 400 fsb. It runs fine.

Are you writing about CPU or GPU temperature?

I have in system properties:

Penitum M 1.86GHz 598MHz

If I good remember it is a Dothan processor

If it's a 1.86 that is indeed a Dothan but the wrong one...PM 750 which is 533Mhz and will never run properly in any T4x apart from T43/p.

What you need is PM 745 aka Intel SL7EN which is the CPU designed for your platform, 400 Mhz...

No, the CPU is not bad per se, it's the *wrong* CPU for the platform your machine is running on.

A CPU designed for 533Mhz can't run at full speed on a 400Mhz machine - which is exactly what we have here...

not bad per se ? sorry, i don't undesrtand

sorry if I'm annoying

About speed - on the label on the processor was stated 1.86 ghz, I see same in the system properties, and BIOS, are you sure, that it isn't work properly? Maybe CPUZ shows something intereesting?

Let's try it this way:

a) Your CPU (which I presume to be Intel SL7S9) belongs to the correct generation (Dothan-cored PM) and hence will boot when installed, and be seen in Windows and elsewhere. This is a 533Mhz CPU, designed for T43/p and R51/e, R52.

b) That being said, it is *not* a proper CPU for your machine which requires a 400Mhz CPU, such as SL7EN (PM 745@1.8 Ghz) or SL7EM (PM755@2.0 Ghz).

In plain English, that CPU will never run at full 1.86 in your T40p.

oooh my god :(

Thank you for your replies,
sorry for my ENglish :(

I will start to seek the fastest possible.

is this SL7EM will be colder than overloaded PM1.5 ? Is therre any faster processor?

Faster CPUs: SL7EM (2.0 Ghz) and SL7V3 (2.1 Ghz) known as PM 755 and PM 765 respectively.

PM 745 should be just about the perfect combination of performance and heat, at least in my book.

Good luck.

thank again for your reply :)

So, maybe better will be PM755 or PM765 with downgraded voltage or multiplier? Is is possible in t40P?

While it most certainly is possible, I'd be advising against it...my preference for that particular machine would be a PM735 or PM745.

What applications you run on regular basis that are be CPU-intensive?

Mainly for the firefox, but sometimes I'm watching hd films, recoding the video files in different formats.
I'm using Photoshop and Gimp else :(

I think that the fastest will be best? So what with heat?

Sounds to me like you need a new(er) laptop, and not a faster CPU.

As for the heat, I'd be *very* reluctant to change the heating/cooling properties of an eight-year old unit with ATi GPU...

Your ThinkPad, your call.

Good luck.

Prior to swapping out my 1.5 Banias for the current 1.8 Dothan I did a bit of reading on this forum and the consensus was the 1.8 was the sweet spot between heat and performance. I am pleased with the performance of my T40p with a 1.8 Dothan and heat is not an issue. As i recall there was a significant price difference between a 1.8 and a 2.0 also. Hope this helps.

Quick search on eBay shows prices for a SL7EN running around $15 w/free shipping. A fair price I think. This cpu swap will make your machine noticeably smoother to use but by no means will it modernize it. An honest assessment of your wants and needs as far as the machine is concerned is a better starting point than trying to force these older machines into a job that didn't exist when they were engineered.
That being said, my time spent upgrading this machine with various parts has been an experience that can't be bought. Lot's of very knowledgeable people on this forum that are willing to guide you. Seems like they stay up all night waiting for someone to post a question!
Good luck with your project, Keith
