All free materials from friends and family, x220 thinkpad w/ ultrabase, i7, 16gb ram, 2 tb SSD and 500 gb m2 on the laptop, hard drive for backups in the base, all in < $350.
For apartment life I have found this to be optimal. Less is more for furniture. When I want to watch a movie I can lie down and angle the monitor; with headphones, it is quite immersive.

Reminds me of my first real apartment in college. No furniture, just an outdoor folding chair, blow-up mattress, 720p television, hooked up via VGA to my first ThinkPad, the T41 (I also had a T61 that was my daily driver for school).

There were RSS or Atom feeds for torrents and I would just let it automatically pull down new episodes all day at 768kb while I was on campus. When I came home, I had at least something new to watch.
