Update! Check last post.

Hi all!

This evening, I suddenly felt like making something creative, so I decided to do a (My FIRST ever) vectorized version of my W500.

A Vector is in basics just a very detailed model made with fairly simple tools.
This image compares a vector graphics to an ordinary Bitmap.

Image

So as you see, with vector you can make really detailed graphics. This here is my attempt on it.

As you may notice, I am not done at all yet. I still have to make the rest of the basic lines, then all the details, and then comes all the shading and special lighting. I will keep this thread updated every now and then when I feel like adding more to the graphics. :)

Original picture (Taken with Canon Powershot S95):

As you can see on the picture, I made it focus primarily on the closest (the right) hinge, speaker holes and W500 text. This makes it incredibly difficult getting the far part right, as you can see on this next picture, which shows my progress on the vector so far!
As mentioned earlier, I am not done with this at all, and I already have some quite specific things, like the left (far) hinge and some other stuff, that I'm not pleased with yet.

Thanks for your interest :)

Regards, Frederik.

If you continue, I'd be willing to iconize these for W500 users so they can use them for their "My Computer", or rather, their "My ThinkPad" icon. ;)

Cool idea! That'd be great :D

Minor update:

As I noticed that the far hinge is way off place on the current vector, I'll need to move it further away, making room for the LCD cable going in.
Will post picture when I got something I think is alright.

Sublime and aesthetically pleasing :)

I like the angle and the contrasting gray and black in that image! You going to vectorize (is that even a word?) the keyboard also? You should try a vector with the ThinkLight incorporated somehow into the picture :)

Thanks for your feedback! :)

I'm not sure whether it's a word or not, but it sounds nice imo. I will do the keyboard once I find the time for it.

An update from me now!

I decided to stop working on the first one, and have a go on a better one, with more detail in it which makes it a bit easier to work with.

This is the progress so far. Around 10-15%. Still need to fix the lighting and gradients, as well as add more small details. :)

Better and better. :)

Once the keyboard is done, and if you can isolate it from the background, that's perfect icon material.

Of course. I happen to have made every single little detail in it's own seperate layers, so exactly that can actually be done. Though the working with 65 (~85 MB) layers as I am right now, really is making my old desktop PC hang a bit. (AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz CPU, 4GB 1,6GHz ram, HD5850, it still is rather fast, but it needs an upgrade)

The background I can disable as well, I just find it easier to compare to the original picture with it on. (y)

A small piece of news from me:

I did the speakers, reworked the powerbutton, did more to the trackpoint buttons, and did the gap and cable between base and display

Thanks for your replies! Truly appreciated!! :D

I found some more time to work on it today, so here's a small update again. :)

I redid the touchpad and fingerprint reader, and started on the keyboard. :)

Now, for the pictures. First the original, then the vector version, then some close-ups.
The close-ups are magnified between 300-500%, and the image stays sharp enough to clearly be able to see what it represents. I will do comparisons with the actual real-life picture when I find time.

Please don't share this pictures anywhere without my permission or credit.

The reason that some of them looks 'blurry' is because that I used blur to make the shadowing better on the round edges and such alike. (y)

Also, bear in mind that this is not complete at all. Progress is currently at 15-20%.

Made shadowing and gradients on the body of the Thinkpad, as well as the Thinkpad logo, and I made a bit more on the keyboard. :)

Wow, this is amazing! I make vectors as well and even tried a ThinkPad once, but it does not even come close to your level of detail! It must be a real pain to do all of those keys.

Keep up the awesome work!

I haven't had the time to add more to it atm. Mainly because of exams coming in now.
I'll continue working on it, and I have got several backups of the work, several places (both physical and on my drives).
