My ThinkPads + other old IBM goodies.

#1 Post by james008 » Thu Jul 10, 2014 5:59 am

Hello all, I'm James from Melbourne AU. I have always been a fan of Thinkpads but until recently I never had one, my like of Thinkpads stemmed from my like of old IBM computers.

Last year I got a used (ex-fleet) X61, and it is a brilliant little machine!
It's mostly standard with a C2D T7300, 2GB RAM, 100GB hard drive, Windows 7 (originally Vista) and an 8 cell battery. There are, unfortunately, a few signs of its age such as couple of cracks in the casing (Top LH screen corner and just above the PCMCIA slot, where the plastic is very thin), a slightly noisy fan and a missing PCMCIA cover.

Apologies for the mess.
The IBM monitor making a cameo in the background is from a late 1990's IBM Aptiva and is my second monitor for my desktop.

Unfortunately it just does not have the processing power I require, so about a month ago a new W530 came along, I looked at the W540 but liked the W530 better, plus I got it for a VERY good price as it was clearance stock. However I did get slightly carried away with the specs so I have now ended up with an i7 3840QM, 8GB RAM (I will upgrade to 16GB as required), K2000M, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, Windows 7 Ultimate and a 1920x1080 screen. The new W530 is a powerful machine indeed and the SSD is brilliant! But it is big, bulky and heavy so instead of replacing the X61 I have decided to keep both.
(I don't have any pics of the 530 yet)

There seems to be a few classic Thinkpad fans getting around here so some should appreciate this relic that predates the Thinkpad. An IBM Model 30-286, the two button mouse, model M keyboard (with a small command sheet) for Word Perfect, 12" VGA colour monitor, and Windows 3.1 are all original! I also have a Star NX-1000 dot matrix printer to go with it, and the amplifier next to it in the photo is a 1970's Sansui AU-101, I also have a pair of Interdyn 125 speakers to go with the amp (Interdyn were an in house brand of an AV shop that used to be around in Melbourne, and they are quite good)

Apologies for the long post.

The X series is a great all rounder portable. I'm on my 2nd model X220 works great, it has:

8GB ram
i5 Processor 2520M 2.50 Ghz
500GB Samsung Evo 840 SSD Drive

I use docking stations for my ThinkPad one standard and the other is the DVD docking station.

May I recommend you and everyone else install a SSD into your ThinkPads you enjoy a massive performance boost.

I have a W530 that also has a docking station but I'm going to Sydney and I'll more take pictures while I'm there.
