When did they ever make good ones?

Man, that full-fledged LED indicator bar on the front is something that I can only dream my T430 had.
I think the ones from the newer models, thinking **10 gen and newer are decent. I've only gotten to use Sanyos in two T410 and the T520 and they seem alright. Depreciated, but holding their own at high cycle counts - not as bad as the 6 cell I put in the T42p with only 80 cycles and barely 20% capacity. It is old, though.

At least T430 has any lights. P50 has just one, and every other new one has none.

I followed dr_st's advice, second post in this thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=121191 for what versions of PM and the PM driver to install. I still encountered a random freeze when plugging in the AC adapter once so I'm not entirely sure of its reliability, but it seems to work fully otherwise. It's the oldest version of Power Manager 3 and some version of the Power Management driver. I also installed I think the oldest version of the Hotkey Features Integration.

Only issue I'm having is the GPU seems to be underclocking under any load so gaming performance is really bad, I haven't found a good version of catalyst controller to install yet either to try and force the GPU to stay at a high clock, although in my experience underclocking is caused by the GPU overheating, but TPFC isn't reporting any unusually high temperatures on the GPU sensor when I test it. I might have to use my Win XP environment for any games on this.

I have one of those in my T42. It's in even worse shape, believe it or not. :) Actually, what I noticed about all those Sanyo batteries with very low capacity left, is that the battery gauge seems to underestimate the real capacity. So the battery will drain fast, and then stay on 0% for what seems like forever, before the PC shuts down. It can easily have 50% more capacity than it shows, but the problem with this inaccurate gauge is that you never know when it's actually going to quit.

I used the power manager that came from the IBMTOOLS of my T43 OEM HDD instead (1.00b) and it works just fine even though its looks fit with XP more than 7 or even 10. It still works in Windows 10 -- just you have to whitelist it in Windows Defender and rename setup.exe to something else to install. As for the power management driver, Windows 10 forces you to install the newest (1.67.10.20). At one point I got the freezing problem once again but reinstalling solved the problem. I have one version of hotkey features integration (version 6.03 for On Screen Display) that looks like the ones that comes with Windows 7 and it works just fine for any T/A/X/R 2x/3x/4x/5x laptops. The reason why the newest version don't work is it uses a different scale (the newer laptops use the same scale from Windows while the older 2x/3x/4x/5x models use 0-14 for volume and 0-7 for brightness while I am not sure about 6x models)
I had CPU underclocking problem when on battery before for random reasons and after forcing the power management settings both in BIOS and in Windows into absolute maximum for several times it finally went away. Then I also have to change the minimum processor state into 0% to get a cooler and quieter ThinkPad in idle (or else it may stay at 100% and you get weird high-pitched noise when in battery power)

Re: a small collection [pictures] (the Z60mF part 1)

#34 Post by TPFanatic » Thu Jan 05, 2017 5:30 am

I think I have gotten used to the 16:9 aspect ratio, height-wise, thanks to using this T520. My biggest issue with the 15.6" screen size of the T520 is its width. I have to use the laptop farther away on my lap to view the screen comfortably, which is fine, I had to do the same when I moved from 4:3 T42p to 16:10 T500. I still prefer 15.4"'s combination of cinematic width and traditional height.

I figure I would be more comfortable with a 14" 16:9 laptop than a 15.6", since the former screen is the same width as 15" 4:3. The 133 PPI of 14" HD+ interests me since it's the same as 15" UXGA. I hope to get a lid (and CPU) for my T420 once I'm comfortable parting with the funds.....

The Z60mF remains as un-photogenic as ever. It needs correctional painting over where the bodywork involved superglue. It will need even more glue when I replace its temporary paper left hand port gasket with a custom plastic piece. Once the laptop is 95% black again, I may post more full body images of it. Even with a fifth of its screwholes no longer occupied, the machine feels as solid as ever, almost as much as an R500 which is a very solid, well built, high quality laptop. For some reason all the Lenovo T series I used are a bit creaky in certain places.

Unfortunately the Z60m is also very heavy. I bought an original Z60m 6 cell for it to replace its current aftermarket 9 cell-shaped, heavy, 50wh garbage that should make things 7% lighter and look better too. Or I'll cut a notch in it and put it in my T500, and give the Z my Panasonic 9 cell. The options are everywhere.

I dunno if I should share this, view at your own discretion: http://i.imgur.com/yduW2XO.jpg Don't worry, some paint will fix it right up and this will be not only a pretty Thinkpad again, it'll be the fastest and quietest Z series ever.

By quietest I refer to the modding of a T500 fan into the Z60m HSF assembly.
http://i.imgur.com/nb6Xifp.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/ODEjGzX.jpg
It's quieter, spins in the right direction, and blows more air; a big success if you ask me.

This is what happened when I took a picture with flash of the Z lid. I wanted to make the point that from the back my monster still retains the Z series's "beauty". I can confirm it is a Z series indeed. #JustZthings Few other recent Thinkpads are this reflective, http://i.imgur.com/pDEB9lf.jpg if you consider the SL*00 series and the new silver laptops Thinkpads.

The key action of the Z60's ALPS keyboard is spot-on, the second best ALPS I've used, second to T4*/R5* ALPS keyboards, and miles better than the sorry excuses for keyboards ALPS made for T500 and T410.

What Windows is this running again? http://i.imgur.com/d5XYl7E.jpg
This is an appropriate slogan. http://i.imgur.com/ukvTdxD.jpg

Some sides look good, other sides do not. Here are pictures of the Z60mF's good sides. We will ignore the left hand side until it is properly painted.

The laptop came to me with a dead IBM-branded Sony 9 cell. I may try whacking it against a wall to revive it sometime. It was chugging along with a pos 60wh Aftermarket 9 cell until today I installed this used Panasonic 6 cell at 150 cycles and 64% capacity, good enough for looking pretty and as I suspected it has brought the weight slightly down.

IBM vs Lenovo DVD drives: http://i.imgur.com/bb7L1Wj.jpg
Interestingly, the newer 12mm Ultrabay Enhanced drives you'd find in a T510-W530 models fit in the Z60m body better than the original IBM 12mm drives. You can see where the right-hand side extension for the DVD drive is unnecessarily thin on the IBM drive, and thicker on the SATA UE Lenovo drive.

Z60mF and this T500 have actually shared motherboards during a time when I was still working out how to fill the space between the Z60m heatsink and a T500's ATI GPU.

Tomorrow I part with the Lenovo T520 I built from parts. It was a short but sweet relationship that we had. Short and sweet is exactly what the T520 is. It's very fast, very cool running, has lots of (expensive) upgrade potential, but the TV aspect ratio is too short for me.

This picture sold my laptop.

Up next:

Maybe an X201? I've never owned an X series before. I see the chance to get a really nice one and I will seize it.

Well I, however, have a T530i at almost its full potential. Yes it is VERY powerful and blows many laptops out of the water.
I7-3720QM, NVS5400M, 16GB DDR3L (I don't know why that open-boxed Kingston branded HyperX memory kit was the cheapest out of all DDR3 sticks and much cheaper than the regular DDR3 available as well. I don't care as long as it is downward compatible), 500GB WD Blue (I will add SSD if I decide to part with my T43/p machines), crappy 1366*768 display :( which is one of the reasons why I am using my T43p "Frankenpad" as daily driver.

It was a 4239-CTO with Intel graphics missing its CPU. I sourced an i5 2520m, 8GB of PC3-12800L, and a decent hard drive for it, they were not too expensive to get. It had the LG 1600x900 screen (very good screen, but expensive to source) to justify its purchase, otherwise I'd have let it pass. It wasn't the highest end T520 from the factory, every CTO I get is missing features like Bluetooth and FPR, but it handled my games surprisingly better than my T500 with ATI. Of course, since I play them on a T500, they're not very taxing games to begin with. :?

I did win the auction on the X201 and it should arrive this week. I'll put a 500GB hard drive in it, install Windoze, and then? Based on what happened to both my T410's and this T520, you can probably figure out my plan for this.... once I'm finished playing with it, of course.

Well idk if you are interested in this, but I had just upgraded my T530 from a i5-2520m (something it is not supposed to equip anyway) to i7-3720QM which means I now have a i5-2520m in spare! It may be pretty useful if you need to refurbish T520/T420 in the future!

I might be interested! I right now have a T420 mobo that's waiting for a dead T420 for transplantation, however my family has interest in it as a halftop. A CPU would breathe life into it. I'll keep your offer in mind.

Seller image, not mine. I bought this X201 for a good price, missing ram, drive, and drive cover. I've supplied all these things and it's up and running. It's a bit scuffed, there's a little gouge on the right side, and the lid had a little puncture in its center and was dented in. I took the laptop apart to hammer the dent back out, and in doing so discovered the back of the screen had been hit too. Luckily the screen still works, somehow. The thing's a survivor. The only other thing broken is the Thinklight. I can't solder so I bought a replacement cable, hopefully that will solve it so it'll be fully working when/if I resell it.

This is my first X series laptop, the general build quality and design, except for the Thinklight, is amazing. It's so much more portable than my T500 and better for taking out, however "putting two windows side by side," that cliché advertised feature of widescreens, is a joke on 1280x800. My poor experience with 1440x900 on my T410s tells me that an expensive screen upgrade wouldn't help me there either. My requirement for a main computer: 15" and at least 1600 horizontal pixels or bust.

The X201 is currently sitting in pieces while I wait for my screen cable to arrive. When it's up and running again I'll have more pictures to post of it.

Would agree with you to have at least 1600 horizontal pixels. Something like 15" A3xp, R50p, T42p, and T43p already has 1600 horizontal pixels. It feels shameful for the newer computer when a older computer can do more...

I've been playing with these two new arrivals since the end of January.

Image

On the left is an interesting T410i. The keyboard and palmrest are practically mint, but there's case damage at the left USB ports. It also had a perfect, vibrant, bright, clear LG WXGA. Emphasis on "had." I unfortunately damaged the outer layer and it's in need of repair. :( It's chugging along now with a replacement Samsung WXGA, which isn't as vibrant, bright, or clear as the LG it replaced, but the QC is better. The T410 LG screens, both WXGA and WXGA+, are prone to having annoying backlight bleeding in the lower right sides - the Samsung hasn't any of that.

Image

Definitely the funniest thing about these two. The T410 is thinner than the back of the X201, and the X201 has a beefier heatsink than the T410. T410 models have notoriously terrible heatsinks with a slow, single heatpipe, aluminum around the fan instead of copper, and these tiny vents. Even the Nvidia models are skimpy with the sorriest excuse for a heatpipe, noodle-sized copper thing for the Nvidia chip. This T410i has an i3 that gets hotter than my T500 playing Unity. The X201 meanwhile has an i5 that doesn't get above 75C. It's a cooling champ.

Image

The X201 is still a smaller form factor than the T410. The X201 is the same physical width as a 14.1" standard screen laptop, eg. T41, while the T410 is a little wider than a 15" T42.

Image

15.4" is gigantic compared to these things.

Image

Something's wrong when your 14.1" T410 is wider than a 15" A31p....

Image

X201's vent is almost as large as A31p's.

Image

One of these is a lot heavier.

Image

Like nesting dolls. (T410,X201)

Image

I also have this X200 w/ P8600 that needs more RAM and batteries (main and CMOS). Even if won't use it, cramming a touchpad into the X201 is a respectable feat. It's a pretty nice, smooth-surface touchpad with real buttons. I also like the T410's touchpad.

Nice pics and survey!

The T410's poor cooling is notorious by now. I had to refresh thermal paste on mine a while ago, as it was approaching 100C under load. This is something I never had to do on any other Thinkpad, unless the fan gave out and I replaced the entire assembly.

Then again, the fan does hold impressively even after 6+ years of being on almost constantly. Not to mention that my T410 is usually docked, which adds a few degrees to the temperature.

The T410 touchpad looks and feels nice, but gets worn out pretty badly pretty quickly.

A31p is cool. I wish mine still was in good working condition... Maybe some day I'll replace its failing parts. ;) I notice that you have a CD in the left bay. What's in the right bay?

I switched the CD from the right bay to the left so there wouldn't be a hole in the picture. I do have a ultrabay battery that I'm 90% sure is dead, another CD drive, and an HDD adapter somewhere.

Well I guess this resembles one point: nothing is perfect.
In the other hand as almost all of you know, A3x is VERY good in terms of experience. You get some of the best speakers, best LCD, best customizability (2 drive bays, easily upgradable screen size & resolution and it can range from mid-range to workstation class), and best keyboards in the industry!

X60s!!

#49 Post by TPFanatic » Fri Feb 17, 2017 3:43 pm

I bought some broken Thinkpad parts last week and included in them was this cute little IBM lenovo X60s. It's a 1703-3JU with L2400 Core Duo @ 1.66 Ghz and it already has a 2GB stick of DDR2 in it.

What I wasn't expecting was it also had a 128GB SSD with a nearly empty Windows 7 Ultimate installed on it, which saves me the time of installing my own OS.

As a 4:3 computer it sports classic thin bezels and IBM logos. It is interestingly the same length as the Widescreen X200. The X200 is naturally wider.

The X60s has poor gaming options with its Intel 950 graphics media accelerator but it's enough to handle Airfix Dogfighter, a Direct 3D game from the year 2000, and some web content. However the X60s does have a classic IBM laptop's worth of useful ports, and it's one of the first Thinkpads with an SD card reader which I used to grab the pictures from my camera. The warm palmrest issue doesn't bother me too much.

The 8 cell Sanyo battery it came with is very depreciated and very used, with over 300 cycles, but in a laptop as energy-efficient as this one Power Manager claims to offer an hour and a half of battery life. I guess this is my travel computer now, since the X200 needs work put into it and I sold the X201. Thanks for reading!

edit: Included in the parts were half a T420 that displays everything, even analog video, with a cyan tint - a screwy T410 which I've robbed of its speakers, i5 CPU, and a high capacity T430 6 cell, and the aforementioned T430 that receives no power. Is there any hope for these machines? :( I was looking forwards to playing with the T430 but it's dead, Jim.

Put in a drop-in X61s motherboard and off you go with up to 8GB RAM.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

The X6x are lovely machines, but for this day and age their expansion abilities leave much to be desired - for start, they do not have ExpressCard (which T series had since T43), only CardBus. Back in the day it may have been more useful, but today it means that you cannot expand them with eSATA or USB 3.0.

The worst thing, IMO, is the inability to attach dual external displays, or any digital display at all for that matter - because the only dock they support is the X6 Ultrabase, and that only has one video port, and that port is VGA. Thinkpads as old as T30 and even A20p had DVI capabilities through their docks, although I am not sure about the dual external monitors. But since T40 series it's supported for sure.

Tbh even though I use T43p as a daily driver, I haven't even touched the expresscard slot once! I am not a gamer so I am more than satisfied with the speed of USB2.0! In fact none of my devices - other than my Galaxy S5, support USB3 anyways!

The X6x machines in their 4 x 3 form factor are still great IMO. They are what they are and even though they are limited as a daily driver I still love the machine I own.
I am also glad it doesn't have a trackpad and mine only has a T7500 but I only use it basically for web browsing etc. Yes DVI , expresscard or USB 3 don't worry me 1 iota. YMMV

That's like... the most irrelevant deduction I've ever seen. :) What does being a gamer have to do with USB? USB3.0 is good for connecting external storage and transferring files fast. Some need it more than others, gamers and non-gamers alike. It's not a make-or-break thing, that's certain, but it is something to keep in mind. X6x is clearly not as modernizable as its T6x siblings.

I actually realized that it's less about the DVI, and more about the dual external display thing. At work I am docking my laptop and connecting to two external screens in extended desktop (laptop screen is off). I'd been using a T60 like this for 3.5 years before upgrading, and if I needed to, I could use it this way still. But with an X6x it would have been impossible (barring some silly and bandwidth-limited external solution like USB video).

Well I don't even know how to describe things anymore
Anyways it's like I have NEVER even touched a USB 3.0 device other than Galaxy S5!
Plus the fact that ExpressCard 1.0's speed is like 2.5Gbit/s while SATA I in my T43p is 1.5Gbit/s (And that's even after SATA-mod)...

Reborn T420 pictures (with T410)

#56 Post by TPFanatic » Sun Jun 11, 2017 3:11 am

Awhile back I acquired the bottom case, frame, and planar of a T420. It had an i5-2520m in it and hooked up to a monitor I confirmed it working. I plugged in a keyboard, T410 LCD and a TV and had myself a home theater T420 halftop. The cyan tint problem was just the analog video being dumb. The T410 from the same bundle has gotten an i5-540m. Both have been lovely machines to keep around.

Two weeks ago I bought an affordable parts T420, missing CPU and keyboard, to rob the palmrest, lid, and covers for my T420 halftop. Now I have a T420 laptop.

The screen is the LG 1600x900 considered superior to the AUO that my T420s had, although I don't have the T420s anymore to compare. In my opinion the AUO screens are more prone to developing defects and QC problems so I'm happier with the LG. My first AUO (WXGA in an R500) had lots of stuck pixels, my next AUO (WXGA+ T410) had uneven colored backlighting, and last (HD+, T420s) had a lightning bug in it. Only two LG WSXGA+ screens have bothered me so far. Back to the LG HD+, horizontal angles are great and vertical angles are nonexistant. Also the hinges feel stiffer at the extremes. !! I'll live.

The laptop only has a few aesthetic defects, lettering and sticky residue on the lid, missing Lenovo badge, and cracked plastic at the USB ports. I have two perfect T420 bottom cases I could transplant the innards into, I will do that if I upgrade the CPU to an i7 quad core, otherwise there's no need to mess with a well running machine.

Compared with T410 (i5 540m, WXGA)

With the transition to 16:9 aspect ratio LCDs the T420 is wider but shorter than the T410 it succeeds. However the LCD has shrunk more than the laptop, so the T420 may seem oversized for a 14" laptop. The T410 with its "thinner" bezels and 16:10 lcd comes across as elegant. While the T410 has both modem and 1394, the T420 only accommodates one or the other in a replaceable daughter card.

Despite fitted with the 12.5mm Ultrabay Enhanced, the T420's bottom case is somehow the same height as the T410. The T420 is slightly thinner thanks to thinner LCD screens. So they are both oversized laptops, but not as oversized as the 15.6" T510-W530. Both T420 and T410 are wider than 15" 4:3 laptops. Oversized, I tell you!

The LG and AUO T420/T420s HD+ screens seem more vibrant compared to the T410's LG WXGA or WXGA+ screens. The HD+ panels are more evenly lit while the T410 screens are darker at the edges, but the t410's LGs are fairly pleasant to look at. Samsungs are bleh and AUO can be bad. Horizontal angles are better on the HD+ than T410 offerings. The vertical angles are nonexistent on all of them.

The T420 estimates better battery life than the T410 on the same new-old-stock 70++ Sanyo 9 cell I've acquired. The T420 estimates 7-10 hours (probably not true) while the T410 says 5-6 hours fully charged in Maximum Lifespan mode (85wh). They're both high estimates and unlikely to be true. My T500 only estimates 4 hours nowadays with its high-energy CCFL WUXGA and occupied Mini PCI slots, and the X-series in my arsenal need new batteries, so with an SSD this T420 may be my new travel computer!

The laptops are both running spinner drives currently but I've tested them with SSDs and they are blazing fast with them. T420's 2.5" bay is Sata 3 while T410's is Sata 2. The T420 can run an Msata SSD in the WWAN slot @ Sata 2. Both the T420 and T410 are more versatile than their slim counterparts, as the slim models are gimped in battery options and ports, missing SD readers and whatnot. T410s has headache inducing & oftentimes defective Toshiba screens and bad fans. T420s hasn't these problems but still lacks ports compared to normal T420, it also overheats under turbo boost. Only nice thing about the slim T-series is that both their RAM slots are accessible under the laptop, as they are built like the X-series, just oversized and heavier. They're not true T-series in my opinion, they're not even that thin and the X-series will always beat them in lightness.

What annoys me most about the post-CS09 Thinkpads is the plastic bezels appearing popped out for no reason, so I push them back in and that's it, except sometimes the plastic retention clips get worn or bent and the bezels stay out of place forever. The laptops are otherwise solid. I've developed a fondness for the T410 design, it gets bonus points for 16:10 that the T420 cannot match. The T420 has quad core options and 1600x900 in its favor, however. I really want a quad core laptop, but 1600x900 is a major turn off. My perfect Thinkpad is not in the 14" sector, but 15.4".

T500 with quad core and LED WUXGA would be my perfect Thinkpad. At least the latter is accomplished, but how have people modded Core 2 Quad into T61 and not the superior T500 with DDR3 so fast so modern??? Yes I am biased to my laptop.

Thanks for reading.
