My ThinkPads [WARNING: PICS]

#1 Post by zod » Tue Aug 21, 2018 9:36 am

Hi all,

I'm following this magnificent forum for years, I'm also registered for quite some time, but I never wrote a single word here, most probably because in such a big place it's hard to open anything new - you guys already covered all the topics and issues I can think of. But when it comes to ThinkPads, all I can say that I'm in deep love for the last 20 years or so. I changed lot of models through the years, but never sold any of them. So I have ended up with something I like to call collection, although my wife say it's just a hoarding issue. Hope this is a right place to show off :)

First row:

Image

Image
TransNote, PIII 475/192MB/10GB HDD

Image
T40, my good old beaten friend still going strong, P-M 1.5/2GB/40GB HDD/XGA/TTAV

Image
X41t, one of my favourites, my daughter is still using it for drawing, P-M 1.5/2.5GB/128GB mSATA SSD

Image
X61, always carrying it with me, T7300/4GB/256GB SSD/XGA/Middleton

Image
X61s L7500/4GB/64GB SSD/XGA/Middleton

Second row:

Image

Image
T60p T7200/4GB/256GB SSD/UXGA/Middleton

Image
Z61p T7200/3GB/320GB HDD/WUXGA/Middleton

Image
T61p, my working horse, powered on 24/7 for last 4 years T9300/8GB/256GB SSD/WUXGA/Middleton

Image
X300, my wife is using it, SL7100/4GB/128GB SSD/WXGA+/Middleton

And I almost forgot about this poor guy, never used it, so it's practically new:

Image
R40, P4-M 2.2/2GB/100GB HDD/SXGA+/no-1802

So, how many ThinkPads are too many? :)

That is a lot of ThinkPads for sure, not even my own ThinkPads and Tecras combined would ever reach those numbers! It is a very nice collection kept in good shape too, if I may add.

I have a question in mind regarding your R40, though. Have you tried installing a Pentium M Dothan with a BIOS that was modified by a fellow member on this forum? I currently do not have an R40 to test with that BIOS flashed.

EDIT: Woops, I did not see that edit coming by that stated your R40 was a Mobile Pentium 4-M model.

These pictures are way too big, even for the Pictures section. I can't even see a quarter of the picture on my 1200p monitor. Be prepared, the mods are coming, and they will get rid of the tags. Read section 5.

Also, is that a left hand transnote?

And there is never enough Thinkpads.

Thanks Screamer, I never tried to do anything with R40 except adding wifi card and memory upgrade. It's a nice machine, but to be frank, I never liked it much. Just after I bought it, I got my T60p, and I completely forgot about it. Who wouldn''t? At that time, T60p was a quantum leap over R40, and it's still my favourite machine. I also found my old T40 to be way better than R40. I bought it because of beautiful 15" SXGA+, but that was it's only virtue, if you're asking me. Too thick, too heavy and miserable battery life.

Strange, everything looks right on my T61p. I'm not very familiar with imgur, I thought it was automatically preparing pics for forum usage. But if mods find pictures too big, I'll try to edit them somehow.

And yes, it's a left hand TransNote.

Imgur has a built in feature like that, it has automatically resized pictures. I found medium thumbnail (~640x480) to be compliant with this forum.

Your browser must have a resizing feature built in.

Just go to all your imgur tags that look like this

Code: Select all

Change that to by adding the m at the end of the picture file name, but before the .jpg

Code: Select all

That should resize everything down.

It's been a long time since I saw Z61p and X300. Beautiful collection. Lucky to have gotten in before pics are removed.

Ok, resizing all the pics in a minute (or two). Stay tuned :)

Edit: done, hope it's ok now.

Well I hope pictures will remain after edit. Z61p is almost unused, it was too bulky for me, just like R40, but it has very nice display, better than T61p although they are both WUXGA. Build quality is incomparable to T or X series, at least for the plastic parts. My wife loves her X300, but it has really mediocre display compared to other ThinkPads I own.

That's a very nice collection. You can't have too many Thinkpads.

That's like having too much beer, too many firearms, or too much food.

Yeah, that should do it. I don't think there should be any problems now.

Is it Win XP on it? Can you install all TransNote's drivers and programs in XP?

Yesterday I found beautiful, perfectly preserved T41 with dead ATI graphics (works for a while, like 5 minutes, then screen goes black). T41 was also equipped with fantastic NMB keyboard. So I remembered my good, old and almost destroyed T40, only motherboard is in perfect shape, everything else was heavily abused, and did a mobo swap. Now my T40 is like new, and I have already ordered PM755, waiting for it to arrive on Tuesday. Added 2200bg from some old Toshiba instead of 2100b, already had 2GB of RAM in it, and I've added 120GB WD Scorpio instead of old Hitachi 40GB drive. Installing fresh Win7 on it right now. I think it will be a real beast :)

My T40 survived every single situation that would kill any other laptop for sure. So this is the least I can do for my old companion, it's faster than ever with new CPU (Geekbench score is now 782 instead of 568) and on exterior side everything is replaced except display bezel and lower case, so it's still T40. If I come up to T43 cooler with gpu extension that would be it's final upgrade.
