Exposure timing is quite fun to play with, isn't it?

Is that all they do in the movies, is leave the shutter open, for things like decrepit monsters that shake all sorts of weird?

Although you can adujst the shutter speed of a film-based movie camera, you can't actually 'leave it open'. The effect I think you're talking about could be achieved in a very low-budget sort of way by a combination of adjusting the shutter speed and careful editing, but typically is all done digitally.

Also like in the movies, he's typing but there is nothing on the screen. Just his desktop.

Nice piece of photograpy: the lighting also sets of your hands very nicely.

I would like to play around with the concept a bit more, both typing and a few other things. One long exposure shot that can be pretty cool is of traffic at night...something I actually discovered accidentally...I was trying to get a well lit shot out my window at night, leaving at 20 or 30 sec exposure or something. A car drove by, and I got upset that it ruined my shot until I saw the effect.

I agree! About 15 years ago, I took my first picture with a long exposure time; out of the window of a hotel room, with a lot of vehicular traffic in the shot. After that picture I like the results that long exposure times and traffic add to the picture...

I took this long exposure picture of a 'ghost' bus this summer: You can see where it stopped for the red light and right through it to the trees where it stopped at the bus stop.

Beautiful...thats well worthy of a print if you haven't already.
I assume you shot that in black and white then colored the brake lights in photoshop, right?

Lovely pics, the pair of you. I hope neither of you mind if I confess to having d/l'd them and I'm using them as backgrounds for my T42.

Cheers

I used this photo as a header image on my blog. I've sent you pm that wasn't read and an email which bounced back. How can I find you Mike? Guys, do you think it's ok I went ahead and did this anyway? Mike, upon your approval, I will give you credit for the photo in a thank you post and link your site.
