Just a few pics of my warhorse T40 and my new X31 that arrived yesterday I mentioned it in another thread, but with the Ultrabase fixed on, it reminds me a lot of my old 760XL. Without it though (and that's how I intend to use it the majority of time with uni and work business) it looks great and what I expected it to be!

The difference in size is smaller than I expected.

I know...I did this back to back pic of them which shows that whilst they're pretty close in thickness, the footprint difference is noticeable. But I was still expecting something a little bit smaller, not that it matters though

You are the first person that I have ever heard that has compared the X series with the 760 series... Granted it is with the base, but still...

Well, simply because the 760XL was the first Thinkpad I ever owned, they feel the same sort of size, and with the X31 I need to reacquaint myself with using the trackpoint full time (since I'm lazyish and use the touchpad on the T40). I dunno what it is that makes me feel like that, because of course, it's far, far, far advanced

Nice set up! Reminds me of my T23 and X30 that I use on a daily basis. Only...you have the two models I wish I could've afforded when I bought these! =)

Now that the X31's been gone for a little while and I bought a nice T23 last week, here's a pic of the 2. The T40's on a simple little notebook stand similar to what's featured here and I think I had it set at a 15 degree angle at the time of the pic, although for my seated height it's more useful at 25 degrees.



The T23's pleasantly surprised me with its reasonably zippy performance (it's not going to have much software on it at all) and from certain angles it has quite an understated elegance.

What brand is the laptop stand you keep your T40 on?

760s were great machines. I won't hear them being disparaged.

It's a brand that's associated with an electronics and office supply chain here in Australia known as Techworks (the brand name; the company name is Officeworks). The stand itself is identical to the one I linked to above, so I guess they've just bought a heap of them and rebadged them under their name. It's good and sturdy for such an inexpensive product (abotu $20 Australian)

My T42 arrived today - it's stunning, and I can see why the SXGA+ Flexview has the reputation it has. May take a slight bit of time to get used to the higher res though. I was able to swap my T40's 80GB drive and one of the 512MB PC2700 sticks (to make 1GB total) flawlessly into the T42 and I'm certainly looking forward to putting this machine to good use. I still can't believe how much of a bargain it was ($465 or so US for the T42 w/ 512 RAM, 40GB HDD, port replicator, adapter and bag)

Wow that's a stellar deal.

I found pics of my old 760XL! They're just 640 x 480 phone pics, because that's all I had back in October 2005 when I sold it. And Tholek, it is a stellar machine and I do regret selling it.

I've got a new toy (not a Thinkpad, but an old but in good condition Toshiba Portege 3480CT) that I placed next to my T42 for a size comparison:



The Portege has an 11.3" XGA LCD, and is only a feather over 3 pounds, I believe. Only downside is that the RAM it takes is what's called a Micro-DIMM, and it'll only take 192MB, but it's a good lightweight machine that I can take with me on my holiday next week and store the many hundreds of photos I'm bound to take. I'll get me a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card tomorrow, ghost the current 12 GB drive onto one of my spare 5400rpm drives and install that for a bit of a boost.

When I have my A22e all ready and running, I shall post a pic of it as well Still waiting for my hard drive cover/caddy.

That's a great little "toy" you have there, KristianJ! Does the battery hold much of a charge?

I was a bit surprised to find that I can actually get around 2 and a half hours of life out of it

I'm posting a photo of my A31p sitting next to my T43. You can see a noticeable difference between a IPS panel and a TN panel. Everything seems bluer on the TN screen.



The Flexview IPS panel is definitely more comfortable to look at, however I'm spending most of time with my T43. For me, a faster computer is a better one. (I have lots of weird programs running on background) And personally, I think Windows Vista is a time saver compared to Windows 2000.

A T60p with Flexview would be ideal! Hopefully I'll get one after graduate from college.

Yeah, I need to clear out the receipts and junk a bit I have a fair few membership cards for clubs, retail outlets and other public venues, and other necessities.

That is a good comparison pic indeed! Makes me realise that I'm spoilt with the 2 Flexviews.

Yesterday I popped in one of my spare Samsung 80GB drives to see whether the A31p would communicate with my T40 XP Pro discs, and (slightly surprisingly to me) it did! I had to do some work on finding the right drivers for the wireless/modem and Bluetooth but otherwise it's been smooth so far. I still have the Win 2000 installation on the 40GB disc I pulled out.

Tomorrow I'll upload some side by side comparison shots of the A31p and T42

I think in Jan i'll look around for a nice A31P. It seems the price is comming down alot on them.It seems like with the A31P you get alot of "bang-for-your $$$" .
I love to see pix's of the A31p next to a X30/31.

I finally got around to taking some side by side pics of my recently acquired Z60m with my T42 - they're not quite scrubbed up for the occasion and the flash when used shows this, but hopefully it'll provide a fair enough idea of the similarities and differences between the 2 (refer to bar under thumbnail for image sizes):






If there are any other angles you're keen to see, let me know and I'll take snaps of them. I'm hoping to set up an offsite album with a lot more pictures within the next couple of weeks.

My parents (with my help) bought my sister a T43 (1871-AF8) for her 21st birthday. Whilst setting it up for her today, I took a pic with my T42p alongside it, because my mum wanted to know what the differences were between the T43, my T42p and the rest of the family's T42 (the latter 2 being 15" and the T43 being 14.1"). I can't believe that 12 months ago, I was using a 14.1" XGA screen - nowadays ieverything on such LCDs just seems way too large!



The good news is that my sister was pleased with the T43, and that it still has almost 7 months warranty remaining should anything go wrong.

One of my workmates owns a Macbook Pro and jokingly set it up on top of mine today at work while I was away from my workspace:



Naturally I did the "Get that Mac off my Thinkpad" thing at him, then when he left the workspace I switched the laptops around so that mine was on top of his:



Apologies for the bad quality phone pics. First time I'd been up close to a MBP and although I didn't use it, it looked and felt quite good. Not as good as the T42p, but I'd gladly try one out for a while if I had the time.

Well, as some may know, I'm not working actively with Thinkpads at the moment, but a couple of fine examples of HP's business line. Here's a shot of my desk layout after a bit of cleaning up:



Things of note from left to right:

- DVD+R and CD-R spindles
- Wireless receiver for my Logitech LX710 keyboard/mouse combo can be seen behind one of the spindles
- 320 GB Samsung HDD in an external 3.5" enclosure
- M&Ms in the gumball machine directly above the hard drive
- HP nw8240 w/ specs as per my sig - it sits on a cooler pad with built in USB hub
- LG 16x dual layer DVD burner in external enclosure
- Brother DCP-330C nultifunction centre, with my iPod Nano on top
- HP nc2400 w/ specs as per sig - the skin is an Embedded theme as detailed here. I came across it via Download Squad and it is really quite a pleasant variation on the XP theme...similar to the original Royale theme but a different coloured Start button and the title bar font is a little bit smaller.

I found out about Synergy whilst searching for info on KVM switches and it works very well for allowing me to use the keyboard/mouse for both laptops simultaneously.

HP does make some nice business notebooks. I wonder how they would stand against a Thinkpad. (Thinkpad would win).
