My office setup (R50p & 20" Samsung LCD)

UPDATE: See
this thread for the most up-to-date photo.
July 29, 2007:
My current computer setup at work. I am still using the same 20" UXGA Samsung LCD, which is rotated 90 deg here because I want to view a PDF document at the largest possible magnification. The laptop is, of course, my first QXGA R50p. As shown in this photo, I usually tile four windows on the screen, with each window at 1024x768 resolution.
April 19, 2007:
A 20" UXGA Samsung SyncMaster 204B LCD on the left, and my Dell Inspiron 6000 (15.4" WUXGA) on the right. You can see three web browsers in this photo. All three browsers have the exact same size in terms of pixels, but the browser looks much bigger on the Samsung LCD, illustrating how much denser the pixels are on the Dell's 15.4" WUXGA screen.

I don't have that much clear space in my entire office/shop, let alone on my desk.

Indeed! Hey, I forgot about inviting you to my lab. When are you leaving Providence?

I'll be working at Brown for the summer, so I'll be in Providence for a few more months.

Hello,
Can I ask you your point about the 15.4" WUXGA screen, how do you manage the 147dpi density, is it better than the 15.4" WSXGA+ in intensive use? I suppose that the sampling on the WUXGA helps for more accuracy with 3D modelling and design, but what about regular tasks as typing or reading? Thx.

It's my favorite LCD type because the super high number of pixels allows me to see so many more things on the screen simultaneously. Just look at the web browsers in these photos. Each one is occupying half of the screen, i.e. 960x1200, which is more pixels than an entire XGA or WXGA screen! I don't do any 3D graphics stuff, but use this laptop only for reading and typing. I don't change the font or text size; I just use Win XP Pro's default settings. So yes, texts and images look very small, but I somehow learned how to get used to them even though my vision isn't that good. Naturally, screens with lower pixel density (e.g. WSXGA+) would be much easier on the eyes, but would not give me enough real estate.

Which sig, I seem to change it once a month or so. Now the quote is from 1987s Wall Street, but I'm sure everyone already knew that.

Oh, it was about how you thought that "The Shadow probably used a Thinkpad".

Thank you. I think it's a hard choice between WSXGA+ and WUXGA on 15.4" panels. I didn't tried yet the WUXGA on a 15.4". Maybe I would say as you did once I try it. Comfort on computer experience is my concern, and comfort is eyes stress(less) as well as generous screen : so, how to balance? I wonder if the upcoming T61p has the screen choice.
If you have others photos and shots, they will be welcome!

The T61p will have 15.4" WUXGA. And yes, when I have a chance, I will take more photos of the same Inspiron with resolution set at WUXGA or WSXGA+, and put the photos side by side to show how much smaller things look.

As I promised, I took some photos of the Inspiron set at three different resolutsions: WXGA (1280x800), WSXGA+ (1680x1050), and WUXGA (1920x1200):
In the top image, an Internet Explorer browser is maximized on the WXGA screen. In the other two images, the browser still occupies the same number of pixels, but because of the higher pixel densities, it appears much smaller.

kwoon, can you actually read those documents when they are all pulled up like that, I could not tell from the pic and downloading it, that is a lot of real estate there.

For Microsoft Word documents, I can view up to three 8.5"x11" pages/documents, each shown at 74%, tiled side by side. That's about the limit of my visual acuity.

I sold my Dell Inspiron and now use one of my R50p's at work. A new photo showing the current setup is shown in the first post of this thread.

I recently visited pianowizard at his lab. The setup is quite impressive, and the text on his R50p is not as difficult to read as I thought. I should note, though, that as my prescription lenses have strengthened I have been able to read smaller and smaller text...
You can't see it in the photos, but the screen on his Dell Axim x51v is really nice too.

Now you know why I love my Axim so much, a teeny little computer in my purse!!
