Enough desk layouts... check out my IN-CAR X41 setup

#1 Post by minc3d » Wed Apr 02, 2008 5:20 pm

Hey everyone,

I just got done with my Honda CRV 2004 in-car laptop mount setup for my X41. It will soon be replaced by my arriving X60 tablet laptop, but for the time being, I just had to show everyone how this came out. After long hours of research of how to mount this thing in the car, I did it with a RAM mount off the net and a few more misc accessories. Works like a charm and I can use Streets and Trips with my GPS and text to speech off the Thinkpad without trouble!

The laptop connects to a GlobalSat USB GPS receiver with a SIRFSTAR III chipset and the software is Microsoft's Streets and Trips 2007. When my tablet arrives, I plan on using Journal for quick notes when clients call and I am in between appts. BTW I provide emergency IT support in the Chicago suburbs so hence why I geeked out with such a setup. Paper was becoming hellish so this was a better option. The laptop powers through regular AC which goes to a converter which plugs into the cig lighter.

Photos below... enjoy!

Sweet. Only one downside - people will think you are a cop in an unmarked car with a PDT fitted!

Perhaps in U.K.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Or here in San Jose, CA:

Each patrol car has about 8 antennas on it!

The other downside is it might be a burglar magnet. Even with the laptop removed, it's probably obvious what is supposed to go on that stand.

The laptop almost never stays in the car so this wouldnt be an issue, but, if you believed it was an undercover cop unit, would you touch it? :)

When the mount laptop "table" is taken off the ball joint and laid in the back the mount is pretty discreet and actually not that obvious.

I have a Jotto Desk brand in my work truck, I would post a photo but the only one I have right now is with a Dell on it

I have one of the computer security cables that I lock the T43 to the seat base, they are going to need some tools OR break something if if they try to take it, been running this setup for several years now without any trouble.

Anyway, nice to see other similar setups.
