My bricky thinkpad.

#1 Post by JeriC » Sun Sep 14, 2008 11:14 am

So, hello folks!
First at all sorry if my english is quite bad as I am from Germany. (I am not sure.. maybe I had an account here once. I remember reading a lot in this board but I dont know if I ever registered earlier ;) )
I love thinkpads but as a student I cannot afford a new one ;)
Well, the Company where my Dad works got new computers & notebooks and they sold the old ones so dad bought 2 old thinkpads (770) for afaik 10 or 15 euro each (and he got a third one - broken - from the garbage. Maybe it might be useful for parts) and I got one.
Had 64 megs of RAM on it and.. xp. Upgraded it to 192 or so (I also had an old powerbook with broken display hinge, I used the RAM out of this and it worked).
Well, I do not have another photo right now, but this it is:

Yeah, I know, the apple sticker has no style - but I must admit that after the Design of ThinkPads I like the Design of Apple-Notebooks. :D

Yes, sure sounds like that ThinkP770 is a real old timer. I have pasted in a link that might give you some useful information about your 770. Hope it helps a little. You can also Google "Thinkpad 770". It appears there are lots of articles about it on the 'Net.

Thanks. Well, the one I have works - or better worked.
The Connector for the AC/DC-Adaptor broke (the little pin inside broke) and I have to re-solder it. When opening the thinkpad a smd-part fell out (It was inside since I got it - I heard it when I shaked the thinkpad) but it seems it was not neccessary.
(Oh, I see - maybe I expressed a bit wrong. With bricky I do not mean it's bricked or something like that - in German I say "mein Backstein" because it is so huge and heavy.)
(But I will look, because a friend got a TP770z which is dead. Maybe I find something what helps him to fix it)

So this is the power connector.

It seems the pin inside was never soldered to the board itself, but only pressed agains the metal connector. So now it has a loose contact and I am going to solder it.

Probably a bit late, but I like fixing problems like this using a bit of wire. Force exerted on the connector when plugging in will damage your soldering quickly.

Thank you for the hint, I will do so if it breaks again.
But, unfortunatly, the thinkpad seems to be broken anyway. Suddently, I was not able to turn it on any more - the speaker symbol in the little LCD is visible and blinks and the fan turns on, but nothing happens :(

Well, I mentioned that in a German messageboard and got an email like "I saw your thinkpad 770 is broken, I just deleted two of them in the inventory of the company I work because they should be thrown away, so you can get them if you give me the postage, they are 9549-720 (770x) and 9549-820 (770z) and maybe a docking station", so I wait (he is just moving and does not have much time :D ).

Eeer. I googled and saw that this are PII-machines and that the 770x and 770z were availible with 13,7 or 14-inch-screen. Is it possible to see by the model number which kind of screen they have? :)
