Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Updating the T43p to the latest OpenBSD release. A semi-annual ritual for the past half decade. A single core doesn't have much browsing power even using fvwm and netsurf.
To the left, there's the Z13 and Z16, our daily drivers.

Re: Post your desktop.
The Z13 and the Z16 are both done. Multiple keys came off the keyboard on the Z13 under normal use and it is not an easy repair. The Z16 simply refuses to power on anymore. I bought them both in May, including next day international warranty service, but I do not have warranty coverage in this country and have to wait until I am back in the States for my next day service. As it turns out, Lenovo thinks they are operating in this country, but the building from which customer support claims service is provided is actually empty.
I have owned maybe a hundred laptops over the years. Most of them ThinkPads and MacBooks. I enjoyed the Z13 and Z16 when they worked. I loved the form factors of both laptops but this will be the end of my Lenovo ownership. I have never had laptops just fall apart or die like this. My guess is that the Z-series is going to be a dead end for ThinkPads, given that it was designed to emulate MacBook design language that Apple itself has abandoned for better serviceability. HDMI ports and replaceable keyboards and distinct non-USB-C chargers are back in style at Apple.
I still have two laptops for the kids (X280's), and a desktop to hold us over.
The T43p in the picture is still running after 18 years, I can still ping it, but that's six thousand miles away and I won't be back in the States until 2024.

Yes, I always like it, but according to the file properties information I acquired the file in '06, so I have no recollection of its provenance. If you ask me it looks too skinny to be Sequoias, more likely some kind of Pine, but I'm certainly no arborist.

You're not being 100% objective here.unix_joe wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 11:08 amI have owned maybe a hundred laptops over the years (...) have never had laptops just fall apart or die like this. (...) A Z16 is WAY faster than a T43. Meaning: all electronics inside the T43 are expected to work at lower frequencies and use higher voltages. The chips themselves were made using larger node litographies. Motherboard PCBs were noticeably thicker than current ones. All in all, there was simply more room for error. Modern designs squeeze materials in all possible ways, and all that is left is the bare minimum to work. For example, the new connectors for the WIFI (I believe they are u.FL) cards are so tiny and fragile that I damaged one during a simple service to an M900. That never happened to me before with the old and larger connectors (IPEX). So there is a price to pay for all that lightness and thinness: modern electronics are just not as reliable as the older ones.
I've always said that it was a mistake to adopt the USB-C charging standard. USC-C charging as an additional option? Sure! As the sole option? Nope!unix_joe wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 11:08 amMy guess is that the Z-series is going to be a dead end for ThinkPads, given that it was designed to emulate MacBook design language that Apple itself has abandoned for better serviceability. And I get your point about the keyboards, but the truth is that all keyboards are replaceable, it just takes way more labor to do so when it's integrated into the palmrest. I've done language swaps on X1 Carbons. It's tedious but doable.

Re: Post your desktop.
There's also survivor bias going on. If a laptop is going to die or fall apart, it's going to happen in it's first year. The Z13 and the Z16 were my first "new" ThinkPads, new meaning still the current model when I purchased them. Outside of the time I bought 4 T25's when they went on clearance sale at the Outlet, I've only ever purchased older models, and never had these kind of reliability issues, except back when the T42 and T41 had their GPU defects. That was over 15 years ago.mikemex wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 10:00 pm

I think when I get back to the States, I'll replace the Z series with a couple of maxed out P51's and just use that for the next few years. I enjoy the keyboard of my P71 already but I don't want to travel with it. Also, I would like dedicated volume buttons more than I want two extra cores that the P52/P53 have. So from super thin and light to super bulky and heavy.
With all the kids on laptops now, I'm running my own IT department at home too; maybe it's time to standardize us all on the same platform and distro and keep it simple.

Re: Post your desktop.
Here's a shot of both my ThinkPad and ThinkCentre, both daily drivers. ThinkPad has the same wallpaper as the ThinkCentre. (I had posted a question regarding fixing the embedded controller into the W541 section, which is still waiting for approval, however I've actually managed to fix the EC/battery issue by going thermonucular on the EC firmware, and now it's holding a charge for a full hour and a half so far. When the post is approved, I'll share how I fixed it, as it will absolutely be helpful to someone else who has a W540/W541 with battery issues.)
ThinkPad is a W541 from 2014/2015 (I don't actually remember when I ordered it), and the ThinkCentre is a very late 2008 machine, but I've threw in an unsupported CPU and updated the microcode myself (and AGESA modules) to support the FX series of AMD's (it's an early Socket AM3/DDR3 system). Both are running on Windows 11 rather well for their age (and support PopCnt for the latest kernel build, but I fear as far as both are concerned, this is going to be the limit soon).
I also have a T560x in the garage that I need to soon refurbish (it was my high school laptop in my freshman year), but it has a lot of POST codes and won't output to its LCD. It'll need TLC but I'm hoping to get it running on Windows 95 or NT 4.0 (I'm not sure which, but since it has 96MB of RAM, I might go NT 4.0).

That is most likely a (Thinkpad) 560X, as a T560x does not exist (but there is a T560 from 2016).MasterLink wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2024 10:29 pmI also have a T560x ..... since it has 96MB of RAM, I might go NT 4.0.

Re: Post your desktop.
You're right, I've been doing so much Googling lately I keep seeing models like "T440p" so much that somehow my brain put the T in the 560x's model number.
