Delock ExpressCard CardReader

#1 Post by yak » Wed Jul 22, 2009 4:51 am

I just bought this ExpressCard flash card reader as I wanted to be able to read memory cards in my T60 and didn't want an ugly external USB reader. It works pretty well and speedy (it uses the USB 2.0 lane of the ExpressCard slot). From what I could tell it is made in Germany and as such available only here and the closest countries so it probably is irrelevant for most of you but I decided to post pictures of it and my T60 anyway:

The quality is mediocre as the photos were made with a cellphone.

Nice! I'm considering getting one of these (or equivalent) for my laptop as well. Does it work with SDHC?

I got a PCMCIA SD reader. I kind wish I had got the Express card version as there's a gap there with the PCMCIA slot being on the bottom, but I'm not going to spend another $25 to not have the gap.

Supposedly yes. Here are the specs on the manufacturer's site:

So far I've only tested it with a SanDisk Premier 2GB microSD (using the adapter seen on the photos). A 200MB video was written at around 9MB/s and read at 11MB/s. I got the same results using a SanDisk USB microSD reader.

An ExpressCard/34 card leaves a gap to the right when inserted into an ExpressCard/54 slot so it will also collect dust. The PCMCIA slot underneath remains covered but the door go deep in and lie pretty flat so from the outside it looks like a gap too.

I was looking at ExpressCard54 readers, not 34, which I presume had no gaps.

I see. I assumed 34mm because frankly I haven't seen a 54mm card reader (besides a smart-card reader but that's a totally different beast).

I have similar one and quite like it, after installing WinXP patch partially solving USB power drain issue. Unfortunately mine is an old one and can't do SDHC... thinking of replacement, but it seems my dream of ExpressCard/54 with the extra space used for direct microSD/MMmicro slot(s) will remain dream.

Oh yeah, that would be awesome.
