Project: refurbished/refitted IBM ThinkPad 600X

#1 Post by ThinkRob » Thu Dec 30, 2010 10:20 pm

A while ago I purchased a ThinkPad 600x from a forum member.

As planned, I have refurbished it and fixed up/replaced chassis parts, putting it in rather good condition (for its age). It's not perfect, and there are still some cosmetic defects (I couldn't get new parts for obvious reasons...) but I think it's pretty nice.

Not much more to say, really... you're probably just waiting for the ThinkPr0n, so here it is:

Oh, and... uh... the notebook is for sale if you want it... ;)

Wow! That's beautiful. Good job. My 600X is in really good shape, but not nearly that nice. How did you get such a clean finish on the outside of the lid?

That is one beautiful piece of machinery! lol I don't know if any of you remember but this came to mind for whatever reason. There had been a sale in fleabay that had one of these advertised as a T61 w/Core2Duo! In response IIRC a forum member or two sent a message to the guy that what he was selling was not a T61. That gave me a chuckle :D

The speakers in the 600X are SO much louder than my T400 speakers! The rubbery-finish on the palmrest felt nice also!

Great job at refurbishing Rob :thumbs-UP:

I have a dead 600x (water shorted some parts of the motherboard out), but do have working 600's they are nice machines. Most systems you see have the finish coming off the hand wrests and the LCD covers look like hell on most of them.

Did you fine NOS parts to refurb that system, and did you find a good working battery?

I did a cursory test of the battery and it seemed decent (it ran for 30 minutes before I got bored and wandered off to do something else), but I'm not sure how well it would hold up under daily use. I was more interested in fixing the cosmetic issues.

And emeraldgirl08, in case you're wondering what happened to that 600X that you sold me... well... here ya' go. :D
How did you get such a clean finish on the outside of the lid?
It was scavenged from a 600 that was dead, but in workable cosmetic condition. I picked the lid because it didn't have any gouges or deep blemishes -- instead, the wear was more gradual, and over a larg area of the lid. I was therefore able to gently buff/polish the finish until the entire top was roughly similar in tone and texture. So in answer to your question: about 30 minutes of careful application of elbow grease.

I've used the machine a bit since the photos were taken, but mostly it's just been sitting on a shelf.
